Starter Wooden Models
Posted by sdobbins2 on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 7:46 PM
Hey everyone!  I am new to this site and new to ship model building.  I recently inherited the Billings Boat Cutty Sark Model 459 Kit along with all the brass fittings.  It had been sitting in my parents garage for decades.  Only the keel and bulkheads have been assembled.

Having a woodworking background, this sounded like a fun new challenge to undertake.  But as I started doing more research into it, I came to realize that this Cutty Sark might be biting off a bit too much for a beginner.

So I decided to look into some "starter" ships that I can build to learn some of the basics, such as planking and rigging.  I found a few out there.  One in particular was on the Model Expo website (http://modelexpo-online.com/18th-century-longboat-with-tools-and-glue).  They seemed to have several that could be good starters for a wooden model, and that weren't too expensive.

Do you guys have any recommendations on good wooden starter models that I can use to get some experience on before I try my hand at the Cutty Sark?  Or even some other resources that I may not have come across?

Also, if there is anyone who has built the Cutty Sark 459, I'd be very curious to see how that went and how it turned out.  I don't see a lot of information out there on this exact model.

It's also worth noting, it only took about 10 minutes of reading to determine that I really needed to get me a set of the Campbell Plans.  Everyone commented on how invaluable they were.  So I went ahead a purchased those, they are shipping as I write this.

Thank you for any information.  I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at this!
