Asking for Advice: How to Weather a WW2 U.S. Sub
Posted by Johnny Reb on Monday, January 29, 2018 3:14 PM

Hello everybody.

I have built a Revell Gato class submarine and I have painted the deck flat black, the hull above the waterline gray, and the hull below the waterline flat black. I have also sprayed a coat of clear, matte lacquer over everything. I really like the way that it is coming out but, it looks brand new, factory finish.

I am asking; what would be a proper procedure to "wash" the solid black surfaces to give the appearance of time at sea? Also, I would ask this same question in regards to the gray as well?

Any reccomendations as to what materials that I should buy as well?

Thank you!

I have only weathered one .

The U-47 Is the beast in question . It's old now but I weathered it in rusts and greys from the Conning Tower down . Anything around the bow was just a scramble of wear .

Keep an eye on Smithsonian channel for "Hell Below", America fights back.  Has footage of Wahoo coming back to Pearl after a 3 week patrol that shows extensive missing paint from depth charging she took after taking out an entire convoy, plus a destroyer.

As an aside, they miissed some of the details of the patrol (as per what was in the patrol report)

Navsource is a good place to search for pics of various boats during the war. Showing mods and wear and tear.

Hi Jonny Reb,

Welcome.  Please give posting pics a try.  Love to see your Gato.

And that would be the big 1/72 scale Gato by Revell?

Hi Nino;

Thank you for the welcome!

Yes, it is the big 1/72, 56 inch long Revell sub.

I am having difficulty posting pics online on this forum. I am using an Ipad and it seems to be not real compatable here.

I do have a regular laptop; I will give that a try when I get a chance.

     Johnny Reb,

I sent you a Private Message with a write-up I did last year with a few updates.

Your Ipad does not use Firefox or Internet Explorer so there may be issues with some of my  "How-To's".

I am not so good on Kindles and Ipads when doing copy, cut, and paste stuff. Give your laptop a try.

And WOW, 56 inches of Sub!   How many cans of spray paint is that?  You've got a lot of area to weather.
