Modifying a flight deck .

This could be an interesting project!  I have seen several such conversions by using parts from the old Revell Essex class carriers, especially the hurricane bow and angled deck with support structure grafted onto the Midway class ship.  I believe there are several articles on the old www.steelnavy.com website and on www.modelwarships.com website. If you are building a full hull version, an old Forrestal class kit could be helpful as well, grafting the lower hull.

How do you plan on going about this?

Bill ; I plan to keep it as simple as possible .Mor'en likely a waterline configuration .

back in the late 70's, i kitbashed a straight deck midway into an angled deck version & scratch built the f4 phantoms & seaking.

it was making all the aircraft then painting them. i still have that model & aircraft after all these years.

I've got that kit salted away, along with a Forrestal glue bomb for the lower hull. Someday...

350 and 700 3d printed sailors.

Hard to get non fuzzy pics that small. They look a lot better than these photos.

Ordered some 500 scale guns and they look really nice. 5:/38's in several mods, Quad 40's, single 40's in two positions, 3"50's. Nice stuff, and much easier than attempting to put PE on plastic or resin guns. The sailors are from North Star, the guns from 3Dmodelparts and Shapeways. I found the single 40's on shapeways in 1/160 scale, asked if they could do them in 1/500 and a week later had them.

Pretty cool.

I have a question for those who've sailed the seas on these things.

I seem to remember that when the angle deck conversions were done, the flight deck forward of the island stayed wood, while the new rear deck is non-skid over steel.

Or is it all non-skid? 

Essex but not Midway?

Although I visited Midway last October, I didn't pay much attention to the flight deck I guess. But if I recall, the flight deck was all steel, painted with the rough non-skid. Essex, at least in the 1960's when I was aboard, the entire flight deck was still wood, but some parts that took a beating, like the landing area in the arresting gear cables area and the area behind the catapults, had a steel overlay to prevent wear. The whole thing was covered with non-skid though, wood, steel, everything. Because the non-skid was like a thick paint or coating, it would wear or chip off, usually in big flakes, and needed to be touched up frequently, thus the color was kinda blotchy looking where the new coating came up to the older sun bleached parts.

 It seems if my memory isn't failing , that we had about a hundred foot of wood  , Forward ,The rest had been replaced with steel at our last yarding . I won't be quoted , but I believe it had something to do with extended life in service . T.B.
