Fujimi 1\700 Akagi flight deck

Hello;

I need some help from the aircraft carrier experts.

On the Akagi flight deck there are 2 rectangular areas

on the deck. The photoetch I have has the aresting cables

and the catching nets but the two areas mentioned also have

some kind barrier that raises. What is this used for?

If you're referring to the structure which spans the deck just aft of the forward elevator, I believe it's a crash barrier.

Hello;

there is actually 2 strutures like this, one aft of the forward elevator and a smaller one in front of the elevator. The reason I am asking is I am looking at models showing these raised with planes on the deck looking like there ready to take off. Why would these be raised in front of the planes.

Upon further investigation, it seems these structures are actually windbreaks/deflectors, not the crash barrier as I previously thought.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense because the planes always took off into the wind,so I would guess they raised them when readying the planes and then lowered them for takeoff.
