I got mine on Wednesday, but I hope everyone else who got one is having better luck with theirs. Several pieces were boken off the sprues as well as several broken pieces. The cutter on the bow was broken in two and the rail around the rear of the conning tower was broken in six pieces, ugg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I still plan on getting more of them and the Iliad decals though.

I have heard that the packaging could have been better........but I bet ya.....Heavier packaging would mean more cost to us.

I received mine from Squadron today. FedEx managed to bang it up pretty good. The result was that the bow of one of the hull halves was bent over, cracked and about 1/2" of it was either short shot or missing. Judging from the damage I believe broken off. I insured it so I'm sure Squadron will replace the piece or whatever.

My initial comment is that there is great opportunity for some nice photoetch work for the deck. I have to believe that WEM is on the job! And you just have to open up all those flood holes! It would also be nice to see somebody do some resin under deck stuff so that some of those hatches can be opened up.

Have fun boys!

Hey! Thats a cool song! ......but make sure to leave the part out about me in Montana with the goats ok? Tongue [:P]

I plan on opening up the tower hatch and galley Hatch and build just what you would see from above with some lighting.

Does anyone have any idea what the inner hull looks like in reference to the outer hull?

......in other words....just trying to get an idea on how and where to place the inner hull after drilling out all those dang vent holes.

I can't wait! and that darn 1/48 CH46 Sea Knight is out this April as well....AHHHHH!!!!!!! My job is interering with my HOBBY!

Hi papa echo,Yep get hold of anatomy of a ship type V11 U Boat by David Westwood @Amazon.com.
inside the cover there is a 1.125 plan of the boat stick in on the copier and zap it up, also inside there are some brilliant schematic drawings that should give an idea of the dimensions of the pressure hull gap from deck etc.
Drilling the vent holes out is fun(not) be carefull when you get to the stern of the boat as some of the drains do not go all the way through, might be better to just use a black ink pen for these, also look at the wwww.U-Boat net some great pics there if you haven't already done so,hope this is of help. While you are visiting the U Boat net take a look at the pictures of U 995 at Laboe should give you some good reference material, its also a free site, I know at Birkenhead U-534 is a Type IXC slightly different configuration but the pics there will give you an idea of what is under the deck.

Hi papa echo, mine was a walk in purchase at a Hobbyland in Columbus Oh. I think some one at the shipping company stood there and shook the box until they heard some pieces bouncing around(ha ha). I was lucky though, mine wasn,t as bad as weebles described his. The hull halves were not damaged. Iv'e already started building it anyway.

Approve [^]Fed Ex delivered mine from Squadron yesterday in fine shape.

Angry [:(!]Has anyone else in the US had the thrill of trying to purchase metric (.5mm, 1mm, 2mm) drill bits?Banged Head [banghead] The VII-C plans call for holes in those sizes to be drilled for rigging, net cutter, etc. Disapprove [V]UnfortunatelySad [:(]all the hardware stores and hobby shops, and model RR shops in Phoenix carry small drill bits all the Censored [censored]things are in 1/1000-inch (.oo1") incremental sizes--not metric. I've translated the metric as closely as possible to this type measure and the numbered (#60, etc.) wire-guage-sized bits, but it is inexact and a real painGrumpy [|(]!

Do you folks in the metric-using world have similar problems with kits using US measures?Ashamed [*^_^*]

Gee I hope they pay that bill soon...That site ROCKED!
They had killer links to the making of DAS BOOT and other good info on the REAL boot and its history.

I spent at least one hour last night on GOOGLE looking for anything on Das Boot and did not get much.

WHAT SHIP WAS THAT and who was the captain?

My Wifes grandmother was in Dover in 1945 when they were showing off a captured U-BOAT.

Guten tag!

Yup! I just got back from there myself.....careful....you can spend quite some time looking around!

It was the U-96 in Das Boot....I'm pretty sure anyways .....and I believe the reason why you see the laughing swordfish on the side iz because the Comamander at one time brought that emblem with him when transfered to the U-96 So it had the bull on the front tower and the fish on the side.

A VERY COOL SITE!

I'm on the forum as Captain Walker.

Hi All,

I'm usually over on the Armor page (just finished the Sherman Group Build), but who can pass up a 1/72 Type VII??!! Well, I can't! Mine arrived last Friday.. WOOOO HOOOO! Anyhoo, are the color schemes depicted in the instructions accurate? I'm not a U-Boat expert, but am wondering about the type VII's I've seen painted with red below the water line. Was that also common to a certain type? (It looks like the tops of the saddle tanks above the water line were painted dark gray?

Hi Ron!

I think that this kit is luring all kinds of builders!

I have always liked the VIIC U-BOOTS but untill now the model kits were too small or too expensive!

For extra help go here:

Ron

Ron-
This debate always comes up on the SubCommittee webpage as well. Some folks argue that there has never been a red lower hull type VII, while others say that during the war, someone somewhere probably left the docks with primer only.

Part of the debate is caused by Squadron's "U-Boats in Action" book, which has a color plate of one of the Type VIIs with a red lower hull. Also, the Amati kit showed this as well, which might lead to this assumption.

Generally, it is considered standard for a type VII to have a medium to dark gray lower hull on teh vertical surfaces, a dark gray almost black horizontal deck surface, and light gray above the waterline on the vertical surfaces. It is believed that the black boot topping seen painted on some models at the waterline is incorrect as well.

Part two of the problem is that there are very few "true" color (not hand-colored) photos of U-Boats. Aditionally, some boats carried camouflage, depending on where they were deployed. (the Med, North Atlantic, even boats that operated close to the Arctic may have had white conning towers...)

Some of the guys in the SubCommittee have their Type VIIs with lower red hulls- it's very striking, and breaks up what could be a pretty monotonous color scheme. My first Type VII (1/32 scale), which I finished in 1990 was red lower hull, and a camo upper hull. I couldn't pin that to a particular boat, but it looked great.

My current 1/32 scale Type VII will actually be modeled after a specific boat, and will carry authentic camo. with a gray lower hull. (I have some photos...) My Revell model will probably be decked out in a similar fashion.

Bottom line, as some have said elsewhere here on these boards is if you like how it looks, do it. After all, it's your model. And, it will be very difficult to prove you wrong.

Sorry for the long winded post....that's my My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c]
