For reference pictures, including pictures of model builds, don't overlook Google Images.

It is best to actually go to Google's page, rather than rely on a google search embedded in another site.  When you go there, there will be an option in the upper right corner of the page, saying "images."  Select that option, and type in something like "ship VASA."  I tried it just now and saw lots and lots of images.

Thats good advice, Don. I find it very useful. Ther's also a way to sort by image size, which is helpful if good resolution is needed.

I remember the Airfix Wasa being discussed here before. I think it is very well regarded, but dates back to 1971. The other option is the newer Revell kit, first boxed in 2011.

One thing about the Airfix kit, I am sure, is that like a lot of their kits and other kits from that time; the cannons are barrels only that plug into holes in blanked off open gun ports. Thats not a bad thing, just an older way models were often designed.

There was also a discussion about the sharpness and quality of the carvings, an important part of the ship. IIRC, Airfix came out slightly on top in that, but I don't remember for certain.

If you can find the discussions, please share.

There was a build of it on here 10 years ago, you might find it useful.

Thanks for the info guys. I looked up these links and are very informative. My kids got me a book on the Wasa at Christmas because they knew I was going to put it together, it's a great book showing it being built(in animation of course) and it's complete history and pictures of it in the museum. I was curious to see how anyone else painted this ship. The sculpt on this model is unbelievably crisp and very tiny . It will be a bear(if possible) to paint all these figures on this ship in various colors but I'm going to give it a shot. I will put WIP on here as I go. Thanks to all for your help.

Looking forward to seeing this build. looks like a calm environment, a low heart rate and a magnifying glass may be required for the painting.

 Mark,

Here’s a link to Radek Ships, Revell‘s Wasa which has paint color call outs for all sculpted areas/parts. He has scanned a great many instructions for his site which is cool if you need sailing ship instructions. He also sells products for sailing ships and his customer service is amazing. He has an evilBay site HisModel too. As Flint said, you’ll need some type of magnifier and really tiny brushes!

Hope this helps,

Steve
