Tamiys CVN 65 Hanger Doors
Posted by KennyG 1968 on Thursday, January 17, 2019 7:14 PM

Hi all

Firstly thank for the warm welcome to the forum. There looks to be a lot of talented builders here, I aspire to reach your level.

I am pulling together my data to start the Tamiya 1/350 Enterprise build.

I am having a bit of trouble with the hanger doors/ openings. I don't know if the model is a bit inacurate but scaling them to pictures is proving problematic.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the hanger openings they would be willing to share?

Also the distance between the inner and outer openings. My scale measurements came to around 1.6 meters but looking at picture it looks further than that

Any help appreciated

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  A few things came up at home and I temporarily accidentally forgot about your question.

Looking at the General Arrangements for USS Saratoga on the HNSA website  in dicates that her hangar doors were about 25' high by about 62-63' in width with a 10-11' gap between the inner and outer openings (though this appears to get a bit bigger for the lifts nearer to the ends of the ship).

I would expect that maybe the Enterprise may be close to similar.  However, in looking at this image of the NIMITZ flightdeck, it indicates that the width of the main section of that ship's lifts are about 70' wide, and as such I would expect that the hangar openings would be similar sized.

As such, my best estimate is that for the ENTERPRISE, hangar door width would be at least 62 ft, but may be up to about 69-70' in width.  In addtion I would expect the height to be about 25', and the distance between the inner and outer opening to be about 10-11' (with maybe a little increase for the forward and aft most lifts, where the shape of the ship pcomes in a bit).

Hope that helps.

KennyG I’m working on the same thing right now as it turns out. I found a great set of plans available from Tom Pope. You can email him at  b911heavy@yahoo.com here’s what I got from him via email to explain it - stop me if you’ve got these already Yes

 do still have the plan available.  The main benefit of the plan is a full size outline of the hangar deck floor and wall parts that can be cut and trimmed to fit in the Tamiya Enterprise hull, along with carefully measured wall and deck details.  I looked for a long time also but could not find a hangar deck plan so I built the hangar deck from scratch and developed the plans from it. The hangar deck walls and internal arrangement are my best guess based on Burt Kinsey's book, Detail & Scale - USS Enterprise.

What you get is an Adobe *.pdf file that I e-mail, that can be printed at a local print shop on 36 inch wide paper. You then transfer the hangar deck floor and wall outlines to sheet polystyrene plastic. All the necessary instructions are printed on the sheet and can be viewed on your computer. The walls are made from extruded polystyrene plastic from the local hobby shop or from such companies as Evergreen (http://www.evergreenscalemodels.com/). All the sizes and shapes of extruded plastic are described on the drawing.

The file is in color and does include a variety of placards for the walls and the paintings of the first 6 Enterprises as seen on the mid-deck blast doors.

The file sells for $22 US.

COChef;

Thank you so much for your generous offer of decal artwork and pictuires for the USS Enterprise CVN-65 Hangar Deck.

I have just purchased the Tamiya Kit and as i want to add the Hangar Deck and make it it as accurate as possible I have already ordered the Hangar Deck from Shapeways but I am in need of all of the information I can get.

With this in mind could you please send me the artwork for the hanger deck decals including the 1981 era mural and a few pictures if possible.

thank you so much in advance for this.

best regards;

Mel Paul

Thank you

Hi, I am brand new to the forum as I'm building a !:400 scale CVN 65. 1972 era. A friend gave it to me for NZ$1 but it came with no instructions or decals. I have painted all the flightdeck markings etc and built the island and hull. I have started construction of the hanger and your pictures and decals would be very much appreciated. Kind regards Chris in New Zealand

COChef, I just came across your comment here about the Enterprise CVN-65, I too was stationed on the Enterprise (1979-81) being assigned to AIMD, IM-1 while the ship was going through its COH/refit at (then named) Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, and have The Tamiya 1/350 scale CVN 65 Enterprise kit that I've currently stopped construction on while waiting to 'accumulate' enough funds for additional decal sheets, resin, and photo-etch detail parts to continue with its construction. I would appricaite any addtional refference material you have that would help with when I resume construction on this kit. Please e-mail me at: wild57mustang@yahoo.com

plasticutter, if you don't hear from him as this post is somewhat aged let me know. He sent me quite a bit of info that I'm using for my current build. You can check it out in the ships of the american flag group build. Let me know what you're looking for and maybe I can assist as well.

I also served on the Enterprise, in the airwing, VA-27 from the start of work-ups in 1975 for the 1976-77 Deployment to the end of the 1978-79 Deployment.  I am like you, collecting materials for building the Big E during my 2nd deployment.  I have collected some reference stuff.  I would be glad to forward what I have to you, but I don't see a way to do it here as the files would be too large.  I'm not sure of the rules of the forum but if you are interested contact me at mikey25252@comcast.net.

I have an Arii and Revell 1/400 Enterprise if you still need instructions for either I would make pdfs and send them to you if you are still looking for them.  I made some drawings of the 1978 Enterprise that I would share with you.
