Mega Ships or Monster Ships
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Sunday, September 1, 2019 4:12 PM

Whooo-Hooo;

     Anyone that likes Big, Unusual or just plain Weird, Big, Big Ships should watch this show. They had one on the other day. A self propelled Mega -Specialty Lift ship.A hull connected at the Bottom with three pylons on each side connecting it all. Two monster cranes and one heavy Mobile crane. What did it do?

     It pulled up and removed an oil rig's crane and house, plus the crane base tower. Then it lifted up the drilling derrick and base,in one piece! and took these on board. There are some weird looking ships out there now.The Heavy-Lift ship that brought the U.S.S.Cole home is no big deal, nowadays.

      This is a heaven sent time for Scratch-Builders. Take advantage of it. Do be careful seeking info though. The firm in San Fransisco that was running the first Ship Handling Unit type toroidal drive Tug was simply Rude when I expressed interest in their vessel.

       So go to other venues for info.   Some owners of the vessels think they are God's Gift to the Maritime world and they aren't interested those pests and their toy boats!

There's a vast, untapped (potential) market for Shear Legs and similar salvage crane barges (soem of thoe latter at least partially self-propelled).

Would be good subjects in railroad scales, let alone maritime modeling scales.

I've looked, more than once, at th edie-cast 1/50 crawler cranes as a starter for a crane barge.  Tyically, the hard part would be the engines to power the various pumps nad compressors found on those decks.

Would be cool stuff.

Barracuda RC Boats has a pair of laser cut crane barge kits.  One is 1/96th scale and the other is 1/48th scale.

Hi;

     You can find parts that will work. Check out model RailRoad shop equipment. There are a few scales where you can cheat. If in a Diorama for instance you can force the perspective a little. Don't give up on your search for parts,there are firms such as Preiser and Others that make the stuff.

   Some can be found in Oil equipment and Engine parts as well as Rooftop equipment for the same Model RailRoad Building sets. T.B.

For a model of a really large ship, the RoG container ship (Colombo Express) is a real nice kit.  And there is a photo-etch package for it.

Here is an interesting idea for a megaship. The USS Kearsarge BB5 started life as a battleship and then in 1920 was converted into a self propelled crane by removing the superstructure, gun turrets, and armor and installing a huge 250 ton crane. She was given the name Crane Ship 1 and lasted through WWII ending up being scrapped in 1948
