Thanks to those who replied to my request for info on beached LSTs.....I thought there might be a black anchor ball flown, but the Mike flag was something new.

Here are a couple beached in Normandy....

the stern shot shows the Mike flag being flown. According to this international signalmflags list that means “my vessel is stopped”

does anyone have any idea what flag or device a beached LST would fly (like the black "at anchor" ball)?

If deliberately grounded, it will b ethe black ball.  (LST is a ship, therefore follows "ship" rules.)

Now, in the middle of operations, there probably was a list of signals that were prearranged to represent longer signals.    So, "Grounded, battle damage" might be Uniform; "Not Under Command" might be Romeo; "Send Help Sonest" might be Hotel, or some such

This would all be planned out, months ahead of time, wit hthe Operations staf.  It would be informed by decisions like, no recvery vessels until D+1, would reduce the number of signals to pre-prepare.

Calling all ex-Navy SMs or QMs: does anyone have any idea what flag or device a beached LST would fly (like the black "at anchor" ball)? Would colors have been shifted, since the vessel is not underway?  Thanks.
