Sovremenny class Destroyer 1/700

This is Dragon's fairly ancient Sovremenny class Russian destroyer, with the addition of the always-useful Gold Medal photoetch set. Markings from the kit decal sheet are for #743 Stoykiy ('Steadfast'), which Google tells me was launched in 1985, and decommissioned in 1998.

I've always thought the lines of Soviet-era warships are right up there with German WW2 battleships for the (for lack of a better term) 'lethal elegance' of their appearance...and the Sovremenny class seemed the clearest embodiment of that aesthetic.

Don't seem to see many of these completed, these days. Hope you enjoy.

Yes, Enjoyed very much.  Glad you built it. You've re-kindled my interest.

Jeff Head got me interested in other Navy's thru his Web site and various International "Task forces" that he built.  I became especially curious about Russian Navy designed ships and ended up getting a1/700 Slava class (Trumpeter's Vilna Ukraina) and Dragon's Sovremenny along with Cyberhobby's PLAN Fuzhou.

You're right. Very interesting ship designs and all seem to be overloaded with weapons.

Hoping a Udaloy II in 1/700 gets released.

P.S. Really like your upper Decks color. Sure looks perfect.  Any tips on what paint to use?

Thanks, Nino!

I have enjoyed Jeff Head's inspiring work as well, really great motivation. Also funny you should mention Udaloy; I've got a Udaloy hull piece I got as part of a spare parts lot on Ebay, I keep meaning to pick up a waterline kit to go with it! Big Smile

As to the upper deck color, it's mixed from Tamiya acrylics:

(2) parts Orange + (1) part Flat Red + (1) part Hull Red. Adjust to 'taste.'

Cheers

Very nice!

When I worked on the development of the Harpoon, that ship was one of our design targets :-)

A close call for USS Chancellorsville with a Russian DDG:
