Trumpeter HMS Queen Elizabeth WW1 questions barrels and colors
Posted by Rob358 on Sunday, December 1, 2019 7:25 AM

I have the 1/700 Trumpeter WW1 HMS Queen Elizabeth. Can anyone tell me what the can looking things are on the end of the gun barrels? Should they be there?

Also, any ideas for paint color matche? I usually use Vallejo Model air paints.

thanks

  I imagine you mean this:

I would guess these are supposed to be Canvas covers over the barrel ends.  I don't recall any flare to the Guns barrels in any photos. I hope someone with further info can add to my "Guess".

It's a Cap or cover, called a tampion or tompion .  It can be  wood, metal, or a canvas  cover, for the muzzle of a Gun.  Got to keep that salt water out.

I suspect Trumpeter is just showing them "differently".

Tampions of the 15-inch guns on the British battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1917:

As to colors...  I expect some knowledgeable folks will help you out shortly.  I am not a WW1 model builder... yet.

 Edit:
The old Airfix 1/600 Iron Duke had this apparent "can" or flash suppressor on the main guns too.  I think your Queen Elizabeth barrels should be sanded down and these "cans" as you call them, removed.

 Rob,

I use Colourcoat paints for steel ships so I’m not sure what the color match for Vallejo would be but here are the colors for the QE 1918. I hope these help.

Steve

Vertical surfaces are a RN #1 Grey, which is a Medium Grey like Sky Grey 70.989

Steel Decks are RN #4, which is a Dark Grey. Like Basalt Grey 70.869

Both are almost smack dap in the middle of the Grey range. Not to Blue though.

Funnel Caps are Black

Wooden decks are Teak

Bridge decks are RN Corticene which runs towards the Redish Brown but neither dark nor light.

Anti Fouling is a Brownish Red but more on the Red side.

Yeah.  About those cans on the end of the barrels.  yeah.

Those are Trumpeter's horrid effort toward representing the tiny, tiny flare at the end of the real thing.  I can see two solutions to this problem:
1) replace them with brass barrels.
2) Neatly slice/ file the cans (lengthwise) off the barrels.  Do not just cut them off and shorten the barrel.
WARNING: do a better job than I did, as a close inspection of the guns on 'B' turret show that I didn't get them filed off completely down to a round barrel.

Second the recommendation for Colourcoats. Those were formulated by Snyder and Short forf the White Ensign Models line. They are enamels.

Currently stateside you'll find them through second party sellers, but that's easy to track down.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks. I also noticed there were options for blast bags on the guns. Should I use them?

I appreciate the help

Rob,

If you look at the second picture that Jim (Nino) so kindly provided in his post, it shows the QE in 1915 with blast bags. So, I would include them if I was building this model.
