CV-41 Midway question
Posted by GMorrison on Thursday, February 13, 2020 2:33 PM

Maybe someone has the answer here. I'm currently building the island for the ship and staring a photos. It's quite clear in the picture below, but also in others, that the roofs over the bridges are a lighter color than the verticals, which are haze gray.

Or at least it looks that way. Almost like canvas, but that can't be, right?

I suspect it’s just the angle of those overheads relative to the sun that gives the lighter appearance.

Have a look thru these galleries here and you’ll see it’s all pretty consistent Haze Gray

Nice resource, friend. You are probably correct, or it's accumulated bird poop.

It’s a great site, isn’t it? I stumbled across it awhile back while I was looking into some Midway based for projects.

Colors in black and white photos are difficult to determine. However I believe the roofs over the bridges are in fact white. Compare them with the numbers on the stack which we know are white. I think this may have been an experiment to see if the bridge areas could be kept cooler if the overhead was not a dark color that adsorbed heat. It might have been a short lived try and they were repainted normal colors within days. Normal being haze gray for vertical surfaces and dark deck gray for horizontal ones.
