My first model in over 30 years!
Posted by rejd on Saturday, April 11, 2020 5:04 PM

Hi all and thanks for allowing me to join. I have done a few models in the past but have always rushed through them to get them done! I certainly have more patience these days and took a lot more time to get this one completed, well almost, still a bit of touch up work.

Anyhow, with everyone being stuck at home, my son asked about modeling. Before everything got locked down I managed to pick up a few models and some supplies. Over the course of about a week we got quite a bit done. I built an Airfix 1:600 HMS Nelson and my son is working on a Revell 1:426 USS Arizon. It has been a lot of fun and I did learn a lot that I will bring to my next buid (1:48 P-40B tiger shark by Monogram).

Here is what I will do differently:

1) get some gap filler and take care of the unsightly gaps!

2) Water down my acrylic paints and have more coats to get a smoother finish

3) If many smaller parts make up a larger part and are the same color, glue them first and paint after (not sure if this is the proper technique)

4) spend more time prepping parts to get rid of mold lines and other distracters.

I am realizing just how relaxing this hobby can be and I hope to enjoy it for many more years with my son. My son is 13 and doesn't quite have the same patience as I do, LOL. I am struggling with wanting to help him with every piece or allowing him to make his own mistakes to learn from.

I welcome and tips and critisism that you wish to share.

Thanks all and have a great day!

Welcome aboard and welcome back. I took a 40 year hiatus and got back in when my sons were no higher than a periscope peak.

It can be difficult not to help your son every step of the way but I had to learn the same lesson with mine. They know now to ask if they have questions and I let them build models their way. Heck when I younger as with most of us, I would build a model and play with it mostly in one day, if not in one hour. When it was beaten up enough I would usually take them down to the lagoon and blow them up!

There is a great deal of information on the web nowadays so check out as much as you can and ask questions here on the forum. We’re mostly harmless.

Great job so far on your builds!

Steve

Welcome back, you have some very clean builds.  Nice work work on both painting and assembling.
