Polaris Nuke Sub instructions - Revell
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 11, 2004 10:35 PM
Smile [:)] Hello to fellow ship builders. I'm in a little bind because in my compilation of assembly instructions I can't seem to locate the ones for my 1/260 Scale Polaris Nuclear Submaringe, kit no H-437 from Revell. This is the old kit, I just thought I would start to whip this into shape when Sad [:(] I couldn't find them.

Could anyone help or direct me where I can get information on its assembly?

I appreciate all the help I could get.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

My decal sheet shows the following subs
SSB(N) 598 George Washington
SSB(N) 599 Patrick Henry
SSB(N) 600 Theodore Roosevelt
SSB(N) 601 Robert E. Lee
SSB(N) 602 Abraham Lincoln

This is the cut away boat.
If it is the same could you email me a cop?
Thanks cmdrcntr

The 598 (Washington Class) 616 (Lafayette Class) 608 (Ethan Allen Class ) and the 640 ( Ben Franklin Class) were all very different Boats.. The only two Classes that looked similar were the 608 & 616 boats,, and to a trained eye even they are very different... Best thing to do for this kit is to leave out interior stick it together paint it and call it a mix 608/616 class boat.. It's like having a kit of the BB New Jersey and trying to build the BB Washington with it...Same tread different show..

Butchy,
I'm definitely not familiar with the Class cutoff, I will default to someone of a more knowledgeable background. Bow [bow] If anyone has information on where I can get a copy (I don't need an original set) of the instruction sheets, I would appreciate it. I have some feelers out on another forum but still no luck. Wink [;)] Was this kit that awful that no one in their right mind would even touch it? I thought it was contraversial when it originally came out due to the interior view.

Hi Nasafan;
In a word YES this kit is awful. But yes I have built one back in the day when it was only "Nuke Boomer Boat" Model avail. It's basicly a figment of someones imagination..
It does look good closed up and painted. Even the screw ( Propeller) is all wrong for anything but maybe a Skipjack boat..
I spent 10 years on early class Boomers and I would love to see a decent plastic kit of an early boat come out. The Dragon "Ohio "and "688" class attack boat 1/350 scale models are excellent . There are several resin 1/350 kits avail. for all the early Boomers. They are quite pricey though.
The kit you have is really worth more as a collector kit.. But if you are like me you'll build it anyway and settle for a "resemblence model".

Butchy,
Another sub question. Sometimes I see waterlines on subs. Some have red/rust keels with a black water line, some without the black water line, some have a black paint scheme below the water line, and some subs just look - Black or battle ship gray. What gives?

All 688s are now painted solid black from top to bottom. The days of red bottom paint are over with for now, it's cheaper to paint them one color. There are still some out in the fleet that haven't been repainted yet and still carry what is left of the old red paint.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

The Early Boats were all Black.. But Coming out of the yards new they had red anti-fouling paint below the waterline, EB ( Electric Boat ) would continue this red paint practice after refits for a few years. The two boats I served on were always all black.. Actually a Semi Gloss Very dark Blue/black.. The paint was like molasses. When on a westpac on the 601 the crew painted the sail and sides of the missledeck a Haze grey.. This was done while "Underway". We used crappy rollers and in somecases just splashed the paint on.. The paintjob was really bad.. But someone thought it was needed because on this run we were to spend some time surfaced... As for weathering.. Never use "rust" on a Nukeboat.. The steel used on hulls did not Rust. But the waterlines quite often had a dirty white "RING". Dried salt and dead alge,, After a patrol a Boomer was usually covered with alge.. which when it dies turns a whiteish grey..( and smells bad).. If you see a photo of a nuke boat in drydock it sometimes looks like the lower hull is a grey or lighter color than upperhull.. This is the grey color I mentioned that is a result of dead alge.... and salt..
Hope this helps
