Picked up a new, maybe rare?, model ship
Posted by BBorBust on Sunday, June 14, 2020 4:11 PM

So on the way home from the beach yesterday I wanted to hit a few hobby stores. I called ahead to see if any had warship models in stock. The first 2 places I called did not. But the 3rd place I called I hit paydirt. They had multiple models in stock ranging from 1/1200, to 1/200. The place is called Star Hobby in Annapolis MD. We stopped by and they had a great selection of pretty much every model one could want.

As far as ships go, they had a 1/200 Iowa, and a 1/200 Missouri. I wanted the Iowa very badly, but after a beach trip I did not have 350 dollars to drop on a model. My price range 100 dollars or under. They had several models in my range. 2 of which caught my eye. They had a 1/400 Prinz Eugene by Heller, and a model that I have never seen before, by a company I had never heard of. Once I saw it, I had to have it.

So I ended up buying a 1/350 German Konig WW1 battleship by ICM.

I literally know nothing about the brand, and very little about the ship. A quick look at the hull, and included sprues, I noticed that the detail looks pretty darn good. But one thing that I noticed right away is that all of the plastic is a flat white.

I am currently researching a little bit about this ship, as I want to see if the kit is accurate to her true form during WW1. Any input or knowledge about this company, or the model itself is appreciated!

ICM is a Ukrainian company that began in the 90s. So they aren't really 'new' or 'rare'. The ICM kits of the Konig class battleships came out first around 2000 or so, and many reissues since. Heck, even FSM reviewed it. They are generally considered decent kits, and a good base to further detail off of. Check the below links for more info -

They were (they being the four Konig class battleships) eagerly received as new kits at a time when there were almost no WW1 ship kits to choose from. If you are familiar with the Battle of Jutland, these are for you.

There will be a GB "Ships of the German Flag" coming up shortly. I'll be in with the SMS Scharnhorst.

Thanks for the info guys! I was happy when I saw it and picked it up.

And yeah Bill, honestly the reason I picked this up. For the German ship GB. It is different and not seen often. She will be my entry for that GB for sure!

Hello!

ICM is a company from Ukraine. They started small sometime in late nineties with small models of 1:72 tanks and trucks and now have a very nice catalogue of wide range of subjects.

I have several of their kits but didn't build any recently - the last was one of their first 1:72 trucks. All of their newer kits just look great in the box - at least that. And their kit are popular in Poland, they give you excellent value for money, as you surely noticed. I didn't hear people complaining about those kits, neither.

I think I'll just wish you good luck with your WWI warship and hope to see WIP pictures soon! Have a nice day

Paweł

I haven't heard of thisa group build yet.

Once it starts I'll enter the Graf Spee.  The person I built the Mogam,i and Akagi for gave me a model with some extras included.  I haven't even seeen what else is in the box but it seems like a good time to build it.

Ikar... Modelcrazy will start the German ship GB in August, with a 2 year sign-up timeline and unlimited build window.

The only ICM kit I have is a Tiger, but it looks great in the box.

Even with the stated problems of configuraton wit hthe ICM kit, you may have dodged a bullet in not getting the Heller kit.

If your intent were to build IX-300 USS Prinz Eugen, the Heller kit would be a start.  Otherwise it's really more a kit of DKM Eugene.  Its not a very good Admiral Hippy, either.

The instructions are terse in French, and the English translation appears to have been written base on using the least number of words.

The mouldings have a lot of detail, but you are at the mercy of QC for having accepted poorly-cast parts.  One the one I built, most of the parts had been cast with slop in the mould fit, so nothing was round, and it all had a step at the separation plane.

Tha Airfix 1/600 and Pyro 1/1200 were much better kits.

I have the Konig in my stash, but haven't started it yet.  I have built several ICM ship kits, most were pretty good.  Biggest weakness (literally) are the masks.  From now on I will replace masks with brass rod.  Last couple I did the rigging looked fine five minutes after rigging- next morning the masks and yards were all askew from nylon rigging reaching humidity equalibrium with workshop humidity.

Hi Pawel!

Just a head's up.The " Konig" in my stash is being used to provide patterns for a scratchbuild in plastic. Then I will build the Card model and see which is better!

I really enjoyed building the SMS Koenig and Markgraf by ICM years ago.  I agree with Don about the masts.  I also recommend the Zvesda/Revell Russian dreadnoughts. They are quite good.

There is an “edit” button— you can always go back to a post and fix your typos! ( I have to do it to fix mine all the time!)
