Mind, your signalman is a deck too low, he ought be near the signal lamps, close enough to get and give communications to the bridge.

Cheers Capn, I did look to put the signalman top deck but then he was pretty much hidden from view so I put him where he could be seen  and could probably have used a few more figures but that is all that were in the kit.

Foxy, thanks........the ship went to her new home the other day, the window cleaner picked her up when he did the windows. He was very happy with her and to be honest it was a bit of a wrench to let her go after spending so much time with her, but, I don't have anywhere to put her

Which is the problem with figures, there's never enough.  But, if you had enough, it would look horribly over-crowded.

The 40mm pompom is meant to have 8 sailors, and a talker; the forward deck gun a similar number.

Balance is everything, and this is a good balance.

I've just seen this post, Steve - wow, she's a corker!  Your attention to detail and the superb weathering have made this something very special indeed.  I hope your window cleaner finds a display case that does it justice!

Very nice build, you did her proud.

As to a case, might check with a glass/window shop for plexiglass.  Can be cut and assembled fairly easily, and not overly expensive.

A tad late for my purposes, but might be worth popping a few up for anyone who may stumble across this build whilst researching.

I looked through the photos I took on the Sackville.  I have several shots each of the main gun, a smaller repeating weapon, the flying bridge, wheelhouse, and windless.  Anyone want me to post some shots of any of those?

​​​​​​​Got her name plates done. Masks were tiny and difficult to use but have turned out OK with a few touch-ups.

Got the pennant masks today so now she has her numbers (sorry, no photos yet) so now she is 100% done.  There are a couple of little things I could continue to 'play' with.....but I'm not, she is what she is and I am extremely proud and happy with her.

Phone call to the window cleaner tomorrow to let him know it's done and he can come get it when lock-down restrictions allow.

It's not going to be my problem....but................she is going to be a dust magnet! No way to easily clean her, maybe just a gentle air-duster. Did look at custom display cases but they are sooooooooo expensive, got a quote for 250 quid give or take a couple of quid!!!  Will let the cleaner know and he can do as he pleases.

Anyone know of or use a 'cheap option' for a display case.........or know of someone who can do them much cheaper??

This is a great old kit even with some of the molding problems. I built this 72 scale Snowberry many years ago.  You've done a great job with the rope/thread railings as they are difficult. I replaced all the molded Revell glass with clear sheet styrene for a smoother look. The kit glass doesn't fit well

Don, that must have been a great tour.  I always wondered what the engine room and boiler rooms looked like. I have a rough old schematic of the boilers going into the funnel.

It's a lot of fun to build. I would check the deck wood layout for accuracy for anyone building the original kit, as the original kit got it wrong.

@ Don.....I'm guessing the ship you looked round was the Sackville?  Seen a bunch of walkaround videos of her on-line.

@TB, wasn't sure about using the crew figures but after placing a couple of them I decided it gave a bit more 'atmosphere' to her.

My problem now is deciding what to do next, and having used a fair bunch of PE on this model wondering if just an OOTB model will ever be the same again!

       That is one nice job! I would have trouble parting with her too. I believe she has captured " Best in Class" in my mental Model show! I do love the subtle weathering and the addition of a crew going about their business!

So one thinks about it. All of the photos I have seen of Flowers during WW2 are black and white. And most follow the thought of "why would you take a photo of the top of your car."

My wife and I visited Novi Scotia a couple of years ago.  I toured the Museum in Halifax, and they had a model of a Flower Corvette there.  I had intended to tour the ship there after completing the museum.  I had a question about the model there, and asked a docent there.  Turns out he was the sparkplug in a reconditioning of the Corvette at the dock.  Treating me as a serious modeler, he took me personally on a tour of the ship, gratis.  He explained mods to turn it back to WW2 condition, and much about the ship.  I took many pictures from deck level.  I wish I had recorded his comments.

However, I will look through my photos and see if any answers Greg's questions.  I have the kit myself.  But only work I have done so far is main gun.  This thread has gotten me enthused to get mine back on bench.

Well, here she is, just the pennant numbers to put on when the masks arrive. Made a 'posher' base for her to sit on, much better than the supplied plastic one and better than the old one I cobbled together from scrap stuff that I have been using for building her. Lighting in the shed ain't so great, will try a few more in proper daylight tomorrow. Still undecided on whether to make some of the rigging black as per info by a fellow modeller that:

'Standing rigging, that is the rigging which supports the mast and funnel should be black.

Running rigging, that is the rigging which supports and control the yardarm and boat davits is brown.

Signal halyards(those from the yardarm to the rear of the bridge are white.'

Anyone got an opinion on that? The IWM photos I have appear (to my eye) to be too pale to be black.

Anyways, here she is after a few months of work. She was definitely a challenge, but I am immensely proud of my first ever ship build. I've grown rather fond of her and will be a bit of a wrench to hand her over to my window-cleaner...........maybe I'll have to go get myself another maritime build!!!  Have had half an eye on a sub but I think it is huge at 1.3mt!!! (Revell 05168 US Navy Gato Class Submarine (Platinum Edition) 1:72 Plastic Kit).

Between taking the above and below photos I scratched a couple oars for the lifeboats, 'cos the missus commented on how would they row!!

Yes, those are correct.  Signal flags are designed to not repeat patterns, this is to make them distinctive in low/poor light conditions.

The colors are mostly for identification in full sunlight.

Even when similar, they are different.  So TURN (bottom row, #9) is reversed fro9m CODE/ANSWER (next to bottom #5) and in a different color.

Ditto Penant 8 (bottom row #3) and Penant 4 (next to bottom #4)

Specific to this case, Penant 7 (bottom #0) is reversed, horizontally, from Penant 6 (next to bottom #4).  The signal flags are fit with a toggle and a tail so that they canot be flown inverted.

Just part and parcel of the Signalman's Art.

Almost there now. Spent today on and off doing the rigging............first time doing that for me, boy, fiddly or what! Don't know how the guys go the older ships with so much rigging!!!!  A small amount of artistic license has been used, difficult to work it out from the photos I have so it is my best guess plus some of the instructions for Snowberry. It's not 100% accurate but good enough for me and gives it the right impression (in my opinion!)

The only other thing are the ships numbers, thankfully someone is is helping me out on those by making me the masks, so should be too long.

These are the remaining bits to go on, the wooden lifeboats and their hoists, some DC's and the firgures (though not sure if I'll use them or not yet)

Another quick question to the hive-mind. Flags.........................based on the below image of La Malouine what colours are the flags hanging from the front mast? Rear ones are the Ensign and Tricolore.

Would they be these?  If not, any suggestions?   Thanks in advance for any help

The IWM photos are the best ones I've seen. There is some random stuff on Pinterest that's not attributed and not good quality.

The only photos of her I have found are IWM ones (Imperial War Museum). If you have found any others I would very much like to know where you found them.

Its an interesting ship. I didn't know anything about her until you introduced her.

That "shack" is a shelter for the gun crew. It's fun to look at the ship in old photos. There seem to be quite a few taken in good daylight. The mast there is pretty unique. She did fly both the White Ensign and the Tricolour in service, I think the latter on that mast.

The Lewis guns should be black if you are so inclined, and at some point were not mounted at the back of the engine casing, but there was at least one pair mounted on the deck house immediately aft of the funnel.

A little more progress over the past few days. Got a bunch of the railings and 'wire rope' on. The front third is 99% done now, just a couple of cranes to hang and then it's all good.

Have 'cocked-up' a little on the Oerlikons, they are way too high, only noticed it as I had painted up a couple of figures and when posed near them realized they never would be able to reach them!! C'est las vie, not going to pull them off now.........will just keep the figures away from them 

Lifeboats and their cranes need sorting, couple more deck ladders to go on.

Depth charge racks (built and painted) still need to be placed/fixed, along with a few other bits'n'pieces. Had to scratch build the mast on the 'bandstand box' thingy, what they give in the kit does not reflect what I can see on my few photos of La Malouine.

Thank you gentleman for your kind words. She's not done yet....but I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I'd never built a ship (except maybe many mooons ago when I was a kid). Whilst this has been rather time consuming and definitely fiddly...........at the same time, it has been pretty satisfying now that it's starting to come together. I had always built mostly planes, with a few tanks and cars thrown in, but now I think I might go after another ship! 

Since I am building this for my window cleaner chappy, the problems of storage/display are not mine!...................think it would be good to have one to keep.

ps GM, you mention the band around the 4 pounder....I assume you mean the band around the muzzle and not the rear??

 I have to say.This is the closest I've seen to my R.C.d version. I especially like the attention to what makes it a Corvette! Well Done!

Looking quite nice, the wood decks are very nice.

The muzzle of the 4" gun didn't have that band around it. No one can figure out what Matchbox was thinking.
