LE SOLEIL ROYAL - long term build
Posted by domer94 on Thursday, April 1, 2021 3:24 PM

started the kit a year ago, i keep dipping my toes into it. now that i can post pics , here are some of the progress. i used the brass cannon kit sourced on ebay. lots of research from this site on this one. bummer on the scaledecks though. some of the deck sections i glued delaminated and came up in parts. i used spray adhesive and clamped best i could. not sure what to do at this point, but i will keep plugging at it.

Now:

That is the reason I don't use Those aftermarket deck kits. I make my own from Skived basswood pre stained and cut to fit one plank at a time. Yes, tedious but it works for me flawlessly. I love your Filigree work .

You are on a boat in your Avatar aren't you. Gee, just like Dodgy ! Very Calm First mate too! If you don't mine I would like to make a suggestion if that is the Heller Kit! Replace all Mast parts and Spars with Wood dowels. The Main, Mizzen and Foretops are too flimsy to support much in the plastic!

hi there, ive been following your work on this site for a while. i was turned onto using the gold paint pen from the craft store from one of the members here.. needless to say made it 10 times easier and more accurate than fine brush for most of it. i also read about the spars , even though it will be a while until i get there i can see from the bowsprit that that will be the case.  it is the heller kit and ive also found the IMAI instructions online as well which are a great cross refference.

yes the boat was three years ago , and the first mate has gone back to the union hall in the sky unfortunately. have to update the avatar with the "new " boat and the relief mate one of these days.

I bet That first mate has smooth Sailing Now!

As to your kit. It took me nine years to finish mine! Then on a whim I gave it to a lady and her husband that were admiring it. They were at the rec center open house in North Little Rock, Arkansas, one day admiring it and saying it would look great on their Mantel in the New House. Sooo, I gave it to them.

Surprisingly Imaii had a larger one they called a different name. She was the same ship I think, Bumped up in scale and called a spanish galleon. Can you imagine her in 1/96 scale?( that's where I think she wound up!)

I have been working on mine for over Twenty years now.  It is in the rigging stage now, and has been for over a decade now.  There is a lot of riigging on that ship.

Hey Don!

When I got mine done, I looked at her and couldn't help but think,"Anyone who really enjoys Rigging will have a field day with this ship." Even the " Connie" Pales by comparison. Maybe it's the close quarters or scale maybe?

My total time was five years to build and correct and the last four to rig her!
