According to Jeff Head's review here, the PLAN kit has at least some of the original Kuznetsov sprues as 'unused,' with new ones for the island and other structures the Chinese redesigned.

It might be simpler to retrofit than you imagined, especially if you have decent reference material. (If you can find the instructions for the original kit online, that might solve your problem.)

1/350 Trumpeter Kuznetsov vs PLA kit

hello there.  I was hoping to get some help with a question.  Im looking into buying a 1/350 Trumpeter kit of the Kuznetsov.  However, the prices Ive seen are close to $250.  However, Trumpeter also makes the PLAN carrier kit which as far as I know is pretty much the same vessle.  Is this ture?  WOuld I be too far off base buy building the PLAN version and decaling it as Russian?  I can find the PLAN kit for $100.  $150 is a lot to save and Im okay with minor descrapancies between the two versions.  ty
