USS Ward, 1941
Posted by EdGrune on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 11:32 AM

Outside of Pearl Harbor the USS Ward engaged an IJN minisub and fired the first shots by the US in World War 2.

Today Black Cat Models announced the upcoming release of their new 1941 USS Ward in 1:350 scale.

https://blackcatmodels.eu/en/1350/329-uss-ward-dd-139-destroyer.html

The kit is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2022.  No price as of yet.  The kit will include a resin hull, 3D printed detail parts, and PE.   The hull master is made from a 3D printed plug (its cheaper to produce than an entirely printed item).  Black Cat's other ship kits are exquisite and well worth the price.  I will be in line for a couple.  Ordering has been fast, shipping Normandie to Texas in less than 2 weeks by France Post & USPS.

Now where did I put my 5S Sea Blue paint?

According to wiki, in a twist of fate, she was sunk three years to the day of her attack and sinking of the midget submarine.  And the Captain of the destroyer that had to sink her after a kamikaze hit and being abandoned, was her Captain at Pearl Harbor.

Looks like a nice project.

Oh Boy! I'll be in line for that!

Isn't her #3 gun preserved somewhere?

One of her 4/50's is on display in St Paul, MN.

Have seen it is supposed to be number 3 mount, credited with firing the first shot.

Ben @ Black Cat responded to a observation I posed about their product description.  Royal Navy versions (long range escort, Campbeltown) are in the works as is an APD version.  So you will be able to do the Ward as lost.
I hope that a DMS is also planned.  Herman Wouk, author of "The Caine Mutiny" set his story onboard a fictional four pipe minesweeper (the book, not the film). Wouk served on the DMS USS Zane and was the XO on the USS Southard.

Do they happen to make a old Reuben James?  I've wanted a kit of it ever since I heard the Chad Mitchell Trio sing a song about it back in the 60s.

White Ensign did a 1/350, Niko did a 1/700.  Those were marketed as DD245.

She was Clemson class, don't know if any of that class are out there or not.  If so, probably be an fairly easy conversion, as she probably had most of her original equipment.

White Ensign is out of business & the kit is OOP.

Peter Hall was the pattern maker for WEM. His Atlantic Models offers HMS Montgomery, a Town-class conversion of a Wickes.  350 scale

Iron Shipwright makes a Ward with parts for several others in similar classes. 350 scale resin & brass

in 700 scale, Classic Warships made several, including a Campbeltown and an APD. Now OOP.

NIKO as mentioned  Resin kit

Flyhawk makes a very nice plastic and PE Ward and Campbeltown.  Orobably the best small scale kit available
