Modern Russian Navy Colors
Posted by MikeinAlabama on Friday, April 15, 2022 6:55 PM

Hello,

Does anyone know of any equivalents (or "close enoughs") for Colourcoats Russian Baltic Fleet Grey (M20) and Russian Deck Red (M13)?  I did a search and all sources are (obviously) out of stock and the only equivalent was Vic Hobby out of Japan (shipping extremely high for a few bottles of paint).  Any help would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't matter if acrylic or enamel (just available in the USA). Smile

Thanks

Mike

Mike, for my 1/700 Sovremenny class destroyer I used Tamiya acrylics XF-19 Sky Grey and XF-90 Red Brown (the latter with a drop or two of yellow, by-eye, to 'orange' it up a bit), and it seemed to match the photos I had found pretty well.

Everything I read at the time seemed to indicate that paint supplies to fleet units were always somewhat random, with much color variation and patchy spot-repainting often being visible. I didn't go that far with mine, mainly considering the scale, but I did dry-brush everything a bit to 'beat her up' a little. Big Smile

Cheers

Greg

You might be stuck with "close enough is good enough" at this point. Just checked White Ensign Models, and, yep, all the modern Russian naval colors except deck green (really???) are out of stock. In this COVID-era of supply-chain shortages and excuses, we all have to make decisions on what we can live with if we want to keep building.

Hi;

There are sources for the color .Now as to the paint itself.I think you will have to mix it.When I did the " Piotr Veliky" I had no choice and used Vallejo medium Grey and Off White. Rust for the Waterline area. It dried of course, a wee bit darker and closely matched a color Photo I found in the books at the Library.

Concur with "deck green".  I've never seen it before.

Thanks Tanker.  I forgot about the anti-fouling color.  That's one more for the list!

The iPhone App Model Colors (available for free in App Store) contains a database of numerous model and hobby paints,  including Sovereign ColourCoats.   The app has a similar-to function which allows for cross referencing one brand of paint color to others with a variable DeltaCIE or degree of similarity.   I ran the ColourCoat paints with a DeltaCIE of 3 (the smaller the number the closer the match, and conversely).

M13 Deck Red:

Lifecolor RAL3009 Oxide Red

Lifecolor RAL8002 Signal Braun, plus few others.    A larger DeltaCIE had more hits

M12 Deck Green:

Vallejo Model Air Gunship Green

Floquil CNW Green

AK Interactive (AIR) RLM 82, plus several more

M20 Baltic Gray

AK Interactive (AIR) RAF Dark Camo Gray

Mission Models Medium Gray

Vallejo Model Air Neutral Gray, plus many more.

Interestingly there were no Tamiya hits on any of these colors.

Have you checked with Toms Modelworks in California?  They are a seller of Sovereign paints in the States.

My turn . . .

"whatever they are, I hope they're not 'water soluble', and whatever they may be, it's probably a 'deep' shade."

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"
