I bought the Scharnhorst a number of years back and started it but have not finished it.

It's full hull, 1/350 from Combrig (resin) and cost more than I should have spent.

Nice model so far but a lot of work.

Bill,

I am unaware of any model kit of SMS Scharnhorst except for the Navis/Neptune 1/1200 metal casting. Is  there a new one on the market?

Thanks!

I did get the guns and searchlights. They are from Model Monkey. I will look at WEM for the paints. The links for the guns is a great help, I can etail the guns a little more. Along with GMM photoetch, I foun out that Eduards does 2 sheets for the Emden. You have to buy them seperately, so I did. Once the photoetch comes I will start planning the build. Thank you everyone for all the help.

Oh, those are swell!

OP you should get those. The kit decals include black squares that go on the back of the gun boxes, but my gosh these are really sharp! May have to build the Dresden...

There are some fantastic 3-D printed 4.1" guns available, the set comes with the shields and the open mount ones. They look pretty good.

Sorry,but I can't remember who had them,Model Monkey ??

here are a couple of references to what the guns and gun shields actually looked like. I made mine out of thin brass and was a little surprised that there are not PE parts available, probably because the guns themselves are not either.

Try whiteensignmodels.com

My bad

Richard Harden of Toms bought the WEM website on their bankruptcy.  He sells WEM PE and Sovereign's Colourcoats from there

I see you are in Utah.  Toms Modelworks is a US distributor for Colourcoats.  Ordering from the UK/Sovereign is difficult if not impossible

Thank you, I did not know that. I haven't ordered anything from there in sometime, so I will look at the website.

The one thing that is interesting in these instructions is they give mixing ratios (I think, at least it looks like it) to mix for the different areas. Never seen that before on instructions, usually it is paint the hull red or superstructure gray or what ever. I thought WEM was no longer being made so I will look them up as well as Sovereign Colourcoats. Thanks for the help

GMorrison

Those are probably Revell colors. That line of paint does not have specific matches.

Bill

You are probably right, but at least now I know what paints to use if I do have to mix. I completely forgot they made paint until you mentioned it and was scratching my head on this. Got to love brain farts.

The Sovereign Colourcoats C07 Buff would likely be a good choice.   It scales out as being similar to Model Color 912 Tan Yellow (FS 33245).  A bit more yellow but still a good choice might be Model Color 913 Yellow Ochre (FS 33434).   This one is in their Steam Era set.  Another color in the set is Model Color 916 Sand Yellow (no FS given), its a bit more toward neutral khaki beige.   The other yellows & oranges in the Steam Set are likely no bueno, too orange or too yellow.   If you don't have the set, don't buy it for just either of these two colors.   You should be able to order them individually.   Note that they are Model Color brand, not Vallejo Model Air.

See this. I've bought that color and it looks good.

I painted my Emden gray, but used buff and white on my SMS Scharnhorst.

When I did mine, a couple of decades ago, I couldn't find a good buff, even in Testors enamel, so mixed flat yellow with some brown.  I still find a lack of a good buff in most paint lines.  Only suppliers catering to ship modelers seem to have a good buff.

Vallejo paint for SMS Emden

I am going to be building Revell's SMS Emden in pre-war color scheme.I was wondering if anyone new if Vallejo's Steam Era Naval paints would be a good match. Thanks.
