Cheap POB Brig
Posted by missileman2000 on Saturday, June 11, 2022 9:39 AM

I had posted earlier about a line of plank on bulkhead kits on Walmart's web site.  They were very cheap, most being twenty bucks or less.  I ordered a Brig, and received it a couple days ago. The model cost 18 bucks with free shipping.  I thought I would post my impressions of the kit.

The kit came in a plastic bag with a terse label- no kit brand or name, and I don't know whether that number is the stock number or the order number.  The waterline is, I estimate, about a foot long.  It is supposed to be 1:70 scale.

The kit consists of thin plywood sheets, a few dowels, a piece of cloth, and one sheet of constructions.  The plywood is only about 1/16 thick.  This may be a problem with planking, as you cannot drive a pin or screw into the frames, and it will be hard to get the right bevel.  Still, I do intend to build the kit.  The ad said laser cut, and I hoped that the spiling of the planks would already be done.  No luck on that, the planks were laser cut rectangles.  The wood seems a bit stiff and brittle, so I will probably replace them with basswood.  A couple of canon carraiges are included (dowel gun), but I intend it to be a civil ship and will not put in gunports.  Masts and yard stock is not tapered.

The plans are the main disappointment.  There are no words, only nombers and errors.  The printing is terrible.  The halftone pitch is very low, so both the resolution and contrast are both low, so it is hard to really make much of the overall shop showing where deck furniture goes on the deck.

Do I think got my money's worth?  Yes.  At that price I was not expecting Model Shipways quality.  I would not recommend it to a person who has not already built a planked hull vessel.  But to an old hand at planking, it should be buildable.  And it is cheap!

Thanks for your thoughts on the POB kits at Wallmark Don. Think I'll give a look at their site. At that price I can see maybe putting a couple in the stash for a rainy day. I've built a couple of those kits that Professor Tilley didn't like and he was right but I learned a lot trying to do a decent job on them. I'll try to put what I learned to work on them.

Saw somewhere that Wallmart had some plastic kits for sale a little while ago. Kept checking their shelves but they never had any. Worker there knew nothing about them and didn't think they would get any. I keep checking though.

I have looked unsuccessfully on Walmart's site. I just cannot find them.  I hope that Don can make a decent model of the kit.

I went to their site Walmart.com and searched model ships. There are 25 pages (almost identical to each other). Some of the ships are shown over and over but with slightly different prices. There is a ship there that is similar to the Artesania Latina (Artists in the Latrine) "Scottish Maid" that I built years ago only with a few deck guns thrown in. They show some pics of the parts sheets and they look like there is not too many parts. Couldn't see any planking material either unless these old eyes just didn't see them. One ship was priced anywhere from $11 to over $50. Watch out for different locations that they come from. One was from Tokyo with a 3 week delivery. Some didn't have any delivery time or availability.

Looking at them, I would say that what Don said is correct. You'll get what you pay for. Good for a practice build with a tiny investment. I'm going to get a couple to put in the stash for when I need a break from plastic builds.

Oh, there are a couple of plastic warships kits scattered in there too. Some look OK and some are toys. Photos not too clear on some. So buyer beware.
