Just in Time for Shark Week (Submarine Build)

Hi,

I started a submarine build last nite.  My intent is to paint it light/med grey over white and add the shark mouth decal shown below. Smile

So far its been a really quick build, since there are not many parts, but I did run into a couple small issues (mostly due to my not following the instructions correctly and also because I'm not necessarily as good a builder as others here).

The biggest issue on the kit for me was that it has some very fine railing molded separately that goes on the side of the sail.  The pieces were only about 0.5 mm thick (at most).  They were molded with very small legs that were supposed to fit into holes on the sail, but the sprue connections were not on the legs, but rather the thin railing itself, which made cleaning that area up a bit difficult.  In addition the holes in the sail seemed potentially a bit undersized.

After trying to clean and attach them for a while, I ended up accidentally breaking them and loosing a couple sections into my carpet.  As such, I ended up removing the pieces that I had attached and replacing them with some 0.9mm PlasticStruct rod that I had.

The other difficult part was that some of the periscopes and antenns are very thin and meant to fit into holes in the top of the sail, that seemed to be a bit too small for them.  In addition, the locator pins on the bottom of the masts/antennas etc were also less than about 1mm deep or so, so that they really didn't give a lot of connecting surface or help in making sure that the mast/etc was mounted straight.

Other than that though, I've got the model mostly primed and hope to start painting it soon Big Smile

Hi,

Unfortunately, I'm not very good at spray painting, so I mostly brush paint, usually in acrylics, in multiple thin coats at first, before going to heavier coats.  So, it is taking me some time, but I am slowly getting there.

Paint

Hopefully, after a few more coats it will start taking shape.

Hi,

I finished up the upper surface and removed the tape and everything looked really nice, until I tried to do a few touhups.  The new tape that I added to help with the touch ups ended up pulling up the grey off the white primer.  I ended up messing around trying to clean everything up, and got it to a point that hopefully isn't too bad.

As shown below, the starboard side looks a little cleaner than the port side to me, but its almost done and I have penciled in an outline of where the shark mouth decal will go.  After that I still need to clean up the prop and masts, and add two black circles for the eyes, and some lines for gill slits on the side.

Looks great so far!  As a former career submarinet, I appreciate your use of correct terminology!

Hi,

Thanks.  I ended up painting the mouth on instead of using the decal since it was just a little too big for me.  In addition I tried to paint on some gill slits but they didn't look right so I tried removing them for now.  I may eventually try and use some thin black decal strips, depending on what I find shopping.

Anyway, for now this is what I have ended up with.

Hmmm.

What did the hungry shark say to his buddy? Chomp! Neat job.

And always remember; you don't have to out swim the shark, you just have to out swim your buddy .  .  .

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Hi,

After sitting around on a shelf for about four months I finally got around to finishing this model off.  Originally I was going to try and paint gill slits on the side of the hull, but my first couple attempts didn't look so good.  So I ended up repaining over them.  After that, all that was missing was doing some paint touch ups around the starboard side sail fin, that I had accidentally broken off, and the windows in the sail (which I had misplaced, but found yesterday) Smile.

Regards

Pat
