I moved my Steingreber Admiral Vernon today to do a little dusting and noticed how light the ship was despite it's large size (34" long by 33"height)Just out of curiosity I put it on my digital scale and it weighed almost exactly five lbs ..I bet if it was solid hulled it would weigh over 10 lbs !

Sort of like balsa flying model airplanes,  The basic structure is so light and flimsey.  Then you apply the tissue paper covering, and all of a sudden it is strong, yet not much weight was added.  I guess that is what they mean by the term "stressed skin"

Even with using basswood and hardwoods, they can finish up pretty light. My 56" long, 1:12 scale Tango boat still needed 20 lbs. of ballast to float even close to design waterline.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Yes, that is what they mean. Another term is semi-monocoque.
