That turned out great!  You never see these kits built up.  Can you please provide more pictures?

I have seen several done as a French frigate that I heard was the ship used for the hull lines.

I have seen several done as a French frigate that I heard was the ship used for the hull lines.

Which makes sense given the "cut" of the sails as depicted--they have the high-and-narrow look of French sails.

Although, in either case, the spanker gaff probably ought be a latteen spar, even if the spanker is laced/hooped to the mizzen mast.

As either a French or English ship, it's probably a better rendering than as a "pirate" ship.

From my reading, pirates didn't have ships. They lacked both the discipline and manpower to serve a gun of any size on board a ship. Maybe from a coconut palm trunk revetment on an island.

Caught on the sea by the Royal Navy, their demise would be swift and merciless.

Gene- better use of this model as Surprise!

You are correct-  there are multiple threads here on the forum about this kit, the History, and its suitability as a base for a Model of Surprize.

According to Scalemates,  the kit originated as a 1/133 scale Lindberg kit of the French ship La Flore.  Lindberg first released it as the Jolly Roger in 1990, which is all we've seen since.

The HMS Rose was the ship used for the Master and Commander movie.   There are multiple threads here on FSM about the conversions needed to make the La Flore kit look more like the HMS Rose.  As I understand it, the main issue is the hull is too long- that the La Flore has too many guns/gunports.   The "fix" is to cut out an inch or two from the model amidships and then reconnect the hull.

Personally, given that the HMS Surprize is a ship in a work of fiction, I wouldn't go though all the modifications.....
