Anyone who served on that thing gets a lot of respect. Her earlier namesake blew up in harbor in 1944.

!8 guys on shore survived. The only body from Hood ever found was a crewman over on a neighboring ship killed by shrapnel from the explosiion.

Nothing was found of the 350 crew onboard.

After some digging around, I did find the following:

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/misc/auxil/700-kilauea-sco/sco-review.html

This kit gets good reviews and should be pretty accurate.

It was probably a small run and has been out of production for a long time, but it might be possible to find. Try eBay.

USS Mount Hood

I recently met a US Navy vet who served on the ammunition ship, USS Mount Hood during the Vietnam War.  This was the second vessel with this name and he shared how they would resupply the USS KittyHawk.  I'd really like to build him a model of his ship to thank him for his service.  Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes a kit of this class of ship?  I normally work in 1/350 scale but would be willing to build any scale of this type of vessel.  Thanks for your time & insight.
