1/72 scale Matchbox/Revell Flower-class Corvette
Posted by MR TOM SCHRY on Saturday, July 27, 2024 9:46 AM

Greetings Everyone,

Though I'm still searching for a kit of the USS Mt. Hood, I've decided to get rolling onto another project, the 1/72 scale Flower-Class Corvette.  Does anyone have any suggestions for after market sets or tips on how to make this kit POP?  The kit that I own is an old boxing so there are no PE frets included with it.  Wooden decks, PE, resin, or 3-D sets would be great.  My plan is to set it in a water base so figure sets would be nice to have too.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a venerable old kit.  The Matchbox boxing, IIRC, is a four piece hull which wants a great deal of patience.

From Scalemates:  https://www.scalemates.com/kits/matchbox-pk-901-flower-class-corvette--158864

Note the RN figure set near the bottom of the page.

These are supposed to be very good castings:  https://micromaster.co.nz/collections/royal-navy-weapons/1-72-scale

And, of course, a link to Shapeways:  https://www.shapeways.com/shops/micro-master?section=Flowers+Class+Corvettes&s=0

DJ Parkins' Great Little Ships line of products from the UK

https://davidjparkins.com/product-category/great-little-ships/

Their photoetch line is reportedly so extensive that the only remaining kit parts is the hull pieces onto which detail parts (rivets, etc.) are appliqued

Oh, and a note to the Captain's last ... Shapeways has declared bankruptcy and ceased operations in the States.   I believe that I heard that their European operations (Amsterdam?) may still be functional.

I'm building the 1/144 version. There's a really good Shipcraft publication that is loaded with information.

There isn't much wood decking on these ships. Basically the forecastle and the little bridge decks. I used pre-scribed wood sheet and it looks fine.

I'm using Eduard PE sets. Model Master paints from my horde.

My ship is all-grey, pre-radar.

Shapeways filed for bankruptcy on July 2, 2024.  Several other forums had discussions about their bankruptcy.  Some of the various Shapeways shops have invested in their own printers or contracted with other 3D printer sources.
