color questions
Posted by kustommodeler1 on Thursday, April 29, 2004 6:36 AM
Hi folks!!! I havent been in here much, as I've been playing kustombuilder1 over at SA.
After a several year break, I am going to build Revell's 1:542 scale CV-60 U.S.S. Saratoga kit.

My questions are: What is the FS # for the overall grey hull paint?

What is the FS # for the "anthracite black" of the flight deck? or is there one? Just looking at 1:1 pics, black just seems too black. Or am I crazy?

Last one: What is the best photo-etch set to get for this kit? Got a link?

I got lots of photos off of www.navsource.org

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks and have a great day!!!

I don't know the FS#, but the color is "haze gray". The fight deck black is a dark gray that looks almost black. It doesn't stay dark very long due to weathering and wear. As a matter of fact, it only takes a few hours of flight ops for a freshly painted flight deck to look like it was never painted. The white striping is the first to deteriorate followed by substantial areas of non-skid to wear down to bare metal (mostly in the landing area). Some areas of the deck are painted more or less often than others and only when the ship leaves a shipyard is the whole deck ever uniformally painted at the same time.
I don't have any info on the PE stuff, but I would be interested in what you find. I served for four years on the Ranger and would like to build a decent version of it.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Darrin, you need to decide what era you are building it in. The flightdecks went through some drastic color changes after the SLEPs in the 1980s.
Subfixer,
What years were you on the Ranger? I went Westpack after her 1987 SLEP. The entire deck was black non-skid that turned a blue/grey towards the middle of the cruise. this matched 2/3 way up the island as well. I was then sent to the Carl Vinson and one big difference I noticed between a nuker and an oiler is that everything downwind of the island isn't black from stack grit.

I have built the ARII 1/720 kit of the Ranger. It wasn't a bad kit if you add PE to it.

Hi subfixer! A member here suggested I try www.whiteensignmodels.com
It's a good link! They have some pretty good lookin' photoetch rails and ladders.
They also carry GMM photoetch parts too.

Hi scottrc! I plan on building the ship as she appeared, and was fitted in 1994 just before decommisioning.
click on the pic!

Most of the color photos on www.navsource.org seem to indicate that maybe light ghost grey FS#36375 would be close, or maybe flat gull grey FS#36440. I'm just not sure which would be the best The flight deck color I think I can handle. I'll just mix and match until I get a really-really dark grey.D]

Hi guys, I'm building the USS Spruance DD963. I served on her for four years and don't know how to get the brass color for the propellers. The model I have is recent after the Tomahawk MK41 VLS fit. Thanks.
