Hopefully without adding fuel to the fire, I notice that the pre-built Tamiya Bismark
does not have the swastika's fore and aft as on the real ship. They are still visible on the wreck after over 60 years underwater.
BTW---I'm a long haired, Harley riding, gun owning, Air Force contractor Navy vet who has no use for extremists of any stripe.
Ray
ps--An Iowa class BB would have eaten the Bismark alive
in a fight. Same thing for the Yamato or Musashi.

Talk about generalizations. My mother-in-law had NO use for me the first time I met her because:
1) I had "long hair" --barely to the top of my shoulder (it was 1980 afterall)
2) I wore a buck knife in the sheath on my belt --she was afraid I was going to rape her daughter (but the guy who date raped her was a "good kid")(I was a outdoorsman of sorts, and I never hid it)
3) I was joining the Navy --she said sailors only did 2 things a) get drunk & b) rape women. But her 2nd husband was OK because marines are better than sailors.
She only changed her additude towards me when I came back from "Desert Storm" (I volunteered to transfer to a ship going there instead of staying put on one that wasn't). Now I'm her "favorite" son-in-law. I'm also the one who put in the most time with one of her 2 daughters. My sister-in-law is on her 3rd husband and has a kid by a 4th (she never married). This year we celebrate 20 years married and I can't imagine me with anyone else.
To try to deny my wife (she tried HARD to brake us up for YEARS) the 23 years (and counting) of happiness (mostly) just on the basis of surface generalizations is stupid, immature, and down right discrimination.
And Larry your doing the same thing with your additude about "Nazi's" etc.

Not that I'm Venting.

I'm a card carrying, on the Federal register, Mohawk Indian...you wanna talk about stereotypes??

We're all drunks, with bad complexions and no language skills, we all say 'eh' like the Canadians at the start and end of every sentence, and we all walk high iron cause we're not afraid of heights...we all live in teepees and have names like 'Dances with Wolves'...oh, and we scalp people...

Get a clue, we run casinos, sell tax-free gas and cigarettes, and run bingo games worth millions of dollars. We don't carry bows and arrows any more, we carry AK-47s and AR-15s.

In my case, college educated, published author, living in suburban NJ, and the 5 year Director of the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum, the first state aviation hall of fame in the nation. My Indian name is Tehotnakwehrawan, which means '2 Dogs humping' (not really). Oh, and I run the number ONE website on the new for ship modelers.

OH NO!... A BIKER!... Run for the hills, they are all drug using, machine gun toting, criminals!Evil [}:)]

How's that for a generalization?Tongue [:P]

I would venture to geuss that most Germans weren't nazis, just soldiers doing their job.
All generalizations are wrong.

Jeff, thank you for saying what needed to be said. Some people should:
1) Think before making such hateful remarks.
2) Stop living in the past. You can't change it, only learn not the repeat the same mistakes.
3) Enjoy a great model for what it is, not what it "stands for".
4) Smile more (I know a ride on my Harley helps alot).Big Smile [:D]

I saw the photos on this. Wow most impressive and with the photoetched kit included. What is this going to cost? We're looking at retail parts alone near $100.

Thank you Jeff. You said everything I was going to say. Too many people asscociate anything German with Nazi. I lived over there for 9 years. I was priveledged to meet many WW 2 combat veterans. Even hint at calling them Nazi's and you could have a fight on your hands (this was in the 70's so I guess wacked on the head with a cane might suffice). It saddens me to see comments like Larry's on these sites. Building models is not about politics.

Larry,

First of all, the Bismarck is not a Nazi ship...she's a German ship. The German Navy was actually about as anti-Nazi as they could get without losing their heads. The Command Staff of the Kreigsmarine were leftovers of the Imperial Navy, where honor, discipline and respect played a major role in their operations. Nazism was viewed by many as a purely political organization that knew very little of military operations, especially naval.

Please don't be so ignorant to think that all Germans were Nazis, because they weren't.

Asthetically, the Bismarck and Tirpitz were two of the prettiest ships ever built, and Tamiya based their decision to release the Bismarck pre-assembled because it's their best seller in the 1/350 line. It's all about the money.

German subjects sell better than most others, especially in armor. Tigers and Panthers are much prettier than Shermans and Churchills, not to mention, far more diverse in camouflage choices for the modeler.

I'm not a pro-Nazi or anything like that, I'm a historian. It's simply unfair to stereotype all Germans that fought in the war as Nazis.

Well, they've only released one so far -- Bismarck. Here's a url showing the build-up. Not half bad at all.

Also note that four out of five of their pre-assembled tanks first being offered are Nazi tanks.

Time for a little rant

By the way, Tamiya will be releasing this ship as their first pre-assembled warship model -- preassembled means prepainted too. Hard to tell, but the paint job looks ok from Tamiya's website.

As usual, it is a bit depressing that Tamiya chose to release a Nazi ship as their first selection. What's wrong with the Missouri? The Prince of Wales? The Nazi fetish held by modelers is very, very disturbing. So their first pre-paint will be a ship of old-fashioned layout, a ship that was hammered to death on its maiden voyage? Yes, because it was a Nazi ship, so it will sell.

Don't get me wrong, it's an interesting ship. I'll have one in my collection eventually, as a representation of what the Germans considered a super-battleship to be (snicker), but it's the flagship of the new pre-assembleds? UGH.

FSM did a World War II Commerative Issue and it included the Tamiya 1/350 Bismark in its articles. But that was like in 1995 so I don't know if you can get hold of it.

If you can find the old Squadron publication of Kreigsmarine, you can get a great deal of research on paint schemes and some detail shots. I don't think FSM ever did an article on the Bismarck though they did one on the Missoui and the Arizona which should give you some overlapping advice

The Tamiya Bismack 1:350 is very good, so don't worry.
All Tamiya 1:350 warship series are great kit.
I also have the Tirpitz, New Jersey, King George V and Yamato, all of them
are great. For even best results add photo-etched detail.

You don't need a reference article - it's a great kit to work with. Lots of detail, good fit and a pleasure to build. Add in the Gold Medal Models photo-etched brass set and you've got a real beauty!

Has FSM ever done an article on Tamiya's 1/350 scale Bismarck?
