Carrier Flight Deck Painting Color
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 5, 2003 11:54 AM
What color/s should I use to paint the deck of an aircraft carrier? The problem of not finding the right color for the deck stopped me from building carriers a few years ago, but I would like to get back into it. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.Question [?]

What era of carrier are you wanting to build? Most WW2 carriers use a camo color. Modern carriers use a dark gray color. The Navy has 2 shades. "Deck Gray", and "Flight Deck Gray". White Ensigns Models sells the proper shade for all modern and WW2 colors, of most every navy. Their website is: www.whiteensignmodels.com .

WW2 Carriers varied from measure to measure, but Deck Blue was one color used.

Had an Italeri carrier kit (USS George Washington 1:720 scale) the instruction manual states that the deck is colored Gunship gray (FS 36118) 1723 model master. Hope this helps

Modern Royal Navy carriers are dark grey however they are generaly well used
and therefor have the appearance of shading. dont get to hung up on exact colour
as weathering will improve the look.

WW2 carriers used a dark blue stain. There are several companies that make this color. Weather and the beating of aircraft landins and takeoffs would wear it fairly quickly. I,m doing an Wssex now sprayed the flight deck tan then plan to do a light overspray of the deck blue color trying to show the pounding of the aircaft and the scrapping of the arrestor gear cables dragging across the deck
