Modern Naval colours?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 8:17 AM
Ok, so, I admit it. I'm relativly new to ships, and MAN, do I need help!

My daughter is stationed on the USS LASSEN (DDG-82) and Panda models has just released it as a 1/350th kit.
Now, I've looked all over for the proper paint colours, but all I can find are WWII camolflage colour charts.
The kit is no help, as the directions say paint the hull grey, the decks dark grey and the lower hull red. So what I need are the specific FSF colour numbers.

Can anyone help? I don't want to go ask my daughter because I'd like to suprise her with the model.

www.whiteensignmodels.com has the proper shades in all era's the hull, bulkheads and all vertical structures are "Haze Gray", the deck "Deck Gray", and the Flight Deck (on the Flight II's) are "Flight Deck Gray".

US gray is indeed called haze gray, as in "Haze gray and underway" like I've been for the last month. It's good to be able to enjoy the forum again.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

So I can use this at my local hobby shop, what are the FS or Model Masters enamel/acrylic numbers for Haze Gray, Deck Gray and Flight Deck Gray?

I'm building a Perry-class frigate for a friend and want to try to get it looking right!

I've just got back into ship modelling after a 10 year hiatus and am working on Panda's 1/350 USS Cole kit. I thought that I had read (I can't remember exactly where) that for Deck Gray to use FS36118 (Gunship Gray) and for Haze Gray to use FS36440 (Flat Gull Gray).

Is FS36118 a MM equivalent, because I can't find FS36008 in the Testor's catalog? Personally, I thought the Gunship Gray seemed a little dark compared to some of the more recent photos I've seen.

Thanks.

Hi Bruce,

You can order the accurately-matched colors direct from us, in our Colourcoats enamels range. No minimum order on paints, and we ship worldwide. The colors you'll want are:

M 03, Modern USN Haze Gray
M 04, Modern USN Deck Gray
M 05, Modern USN Flight Deck Gray
M 06, Modern USN Antifouling Red

Cheers,

Bruce,
Like therriman and John stated, White Ensign Models have all the modern and WWII era ship paints. There are also several sites that carry the colourcoat paints by White Ensign, which might be a little easier to order than from White Ensign since their located in the U.K. The Ship Camouflage website@www.shipcamouflage carries the paints, as does The Floating Drydock@www.floatingdrydock.com. They come in 14ml tins, and sell for about $1.60. Hope this helps you out.
