Another Constitution Question
Posted by Jammer on Monday, June 7, 2004 3:46 PM
Got another Constitution question...It seems like the parts that hold the ratlines to the hull and the crows nests have rope in them. Any suggestions as to the color? The instructions (not much help) have the parts as white, but I would think either black to match the ratlines or brown would be the proper choice.

Thanks!

I think you are talking about the deadeyes. They have the shrouds attached to them that run up and around your mast vertically. Then the ratlines run horizontal between the shrouds. The ropes on the deadeyes should be tan or weathered looking.I usally make the shrouds and the ratlines out of black rigging material. They are the standing rigging
and were usally tarred to perserve them. There is a debate whether the rat lines are tarred or not. Some builders think the weren't because you would get tar all over the ship from going up and down on them. My thoughts are they probable tarred everthing because it was easier and kept them perserved. Hope that helps.

I think Jammer is referring to the lanyard that runs between the upper and lower deadeyes. This would not be tarred because the tension of the shrouds required adjustment form time to time. I use a natural color, albeit a dark one so they don't stand out so much.

I also believe that Jammer is referring to the lanyards, and my choice would be a medium or dark brown.

There was another thread a little while ago in which Ed and I debated the ways of running these lanyards through the deadeyes, it might have been the "Big Jake Rigging Help" one?

If you can't find it, and need that help, come back and ask.
Good luck,
Bruce
