USS Missouri; need colors
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 20, 2004 10:02 AM
I have a 1/600 scale model of the USS Missouri (BB-63) that is made by Kangnam. Unfortunately, they do not list the colors needed in English, and I am no person who knows about Navy paint schemes. Does anyone know what colors I should use for what parts? Thx

What era are you planning to model? As it make a difference.

Like therriman said, it all depends on what era you are making your Missouri. I am taking a stab at it, but I would guess you are building a WWII-era ship. That seems to be the more popular time. Well here is a site I got from another thread that lists what camo schemes your ship was wearing at different times during WWII:

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/usn_bb.htm

Once you get what scheme you want to paint, hit the "Camouflage Measures" button on the left to get a rundown of what and where the colors were placed. And here is a site that will translate those color codes into actually paints:

http://battleships.freewebsitehosting.com/Camo.html

You have to hit that site up early in the day, because they have a data-transfer limit, which when exceeded shuts the site down for the rest of the day. Have at it and good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, as odd as it may seem, the model must be made to represent the Missouri from the past 20-30 years, as it has two helicopters on the rear deck. As I am on ship historian and don't have much knowledge about ships, I have no clue as to what era the model represents. Sorry for making things more complicated!Sad [:(]

Basicly this puts it as a post WW2 version. The colors are all vertical above water line: Haze Gray. Below waterline: anti-fouling red. Decks (non-flight decks): Deck Gray. Flight Deck: Flight Deck Gray.
Personally I get mine from www.whiteensignmodels.com they are a perfect match for the S & S orginal color chips. And they have great service from the UK to the US.

I recently bought several small cans of paint from white ensign.

How much coverage can I expect....as these cans seem to be quite small?

I know that there are numerous variants.....but, what can I expect?

Depends on if you are airbrushing or hand brushing. You will get more coverage if you are airbrushing. A couple of tins might be enough but I'm not sure.
