Revell U.Boat,to cut or not to cut.

Ok, I have my U.boat sitting here for the last 3 months and am torn between building her as is or doing her as a waterline. Space is a bit of a problem or I would do both. What do you think? Which one? Or do both and give one to a good home.

They always look great built full hull on a nice polished hardwood base - either sitting on blocks or on two turned posts.

I'd say complete. Unless you plan to build a water base for the waterline, definitely complete. Plus, do you really want to destroy those beautiful curves. That distinctive shape definitely has to be shown off.

Do her as is. That's a LOT of hull-cutting for a waterline version. And I agree with LeeTree, they do look great as a full-hull model on a couple of brass or wood posts.

Full hull unless you're going to do a diaroma and then the space would be greater - you can't win!

Do one as a diorama. Take one cut it in half and show it surfacing, then use the remaining back half to show the results of a depth bombing by a RN Avenger. Two dioramas for the price of one kit!!

Use a bit of clear acrylic, with a hole cut in it for the u-boat. Model your water on top, and box out the bottom with more acrylic. Stick finished model in hole.

Voila, you can see the bottom, but you can also see the top as a waterline model!

Email me if you didn't understand a word of that, and I will try to explain it in depth. (no pun intended). I think it is the best way to display such a fine kit.

When I first learned of the Revell 1/72 type V11c U-boat I immediately thought Hmmm diorama with the Revell 1/72 Flower class Corvette.
The plan was to take the U-boat and place it in a position where it would be awash and listing,and have the Corvette pulling alongside to take on survivors.

This is a huge job and most of the U-boats hull would wind up in the Bin..So what my plan is to do the Waterline Diorama and a Full hull model [U-556 is my choice]to be displayed seperatly.
What the hell the Revell U-Boat is not very expensive so i think Two is better than one.

The Flower Class Corvettes were built specifically as convoy escorts and frequently came up against U-Boats of all kinds, especially the VII's and IX's, so yes, they would go together brilliantly 1337.................if you have the space!!!!

Incidentally, whilst Battleships, etc, look great as waterline models because all the interesting bits are above the waterline, the same cannot be said for submarines!! If you want to do a diorama with the Corvette, then yes, do waterline. Otherwise I reckon full model

While i'm planning on doing two U-boats one with the corvette and one on it's own,i'd have to agree with the other guys if you can only do one because of lack of space then do a Full Hull.

I had a brainwave..... One as a waterline in a rough Atlantic sea and another as a half model mounted on the wall !!!!!!!. I know some careful surgery will be required on some parts.
