1/350 Yamato Colours
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 24, 2004 10:15 PM
I have just begun building Tamiya's 1/350 Yamato and I'm a little confused about the colour situation. I have read that the deck is supposed to be a greyish-wood colour. I've decided to use Tamiya acrylic "buff" for that, maybe with a little light grey dry-brushed over it or even mixed in. I also wonder about what the proper colour for the bottom of the hull should be, Tamiya's "hull red" seems way too dark. However the biggest concern I have is over the colour of the superstructure. I have read that it was medium grey, but there is a model-master colour called "kure naval arsenal grey" (named for the yard that actually built yamato) that is much lighter, which closely resembles Tamiya's "J.N. Grey". What colours have all you Yamato-builders out there used? Do any of you have experience with the Tamiya "J.N." or model-master "kure" paints? Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

Yamato wore Kure Grey...the IJN had several shades of gray paint, all of which were basically similar (in that they're dark) but the differences were noticable. Typically, the ship wore the color of whatever dockyard its last refit was in...Sasebo, Kure, Maizuru, or Yokosuka. The hull red is a touch too dark, but not much...IJN anti-fouling red was very dark when compared to USN oxide red.

If you're airbrushing, the Model Master paint is okay, but if you're really going after this project heavy, take the extra time and order the IJN colors from White Ensign Models, they have perfect matches to the colors, and they're paints are enamels of Humbrol quality.

I suggest getting the book "Anatomy of a Ship: Yamato". Some information on other colors:

The deck was steel at the bow (color unclear)
Wood midships
Concrete at the stern.

The anti-skid walkway (shown grossly incorrectly in the Tamiya instructions and AA platform were yellow ocre. (Modelmaster's acrylic is the only decent yellow ocre I know of).

This is very incidental to your question, but it reminded me of an outstanding book I read several years back about the sinking of the Yamato. It's called "A Glorious Way to Die' by a Brit named Russell Spurr. It focuses mainly on the
suicide mission of the ship in April 1945 & gives both a horrendous & fascinating account of what it's like from the crew's viewpoint when a ship is attacked & sunk by aircraft--an unforgettable read, if anyone's interested. Any of you ship modelers ever read it?
