Cruisers in larger than 1/350 scale?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 6:16 AM
I've often thought that WWII cruisers had the most beautiful lines of any class of ship, but since I prefer larger sized models I've had a hard time finding a cruiser kit that suits me. A 1/350 cruiser for me is a marginally sized kit. Are there any,
say in 1/250 or 1/200? Anybody ever heard of such an animal?

Hi Mobey, thanks for the email. As far as large cruisers, how much are you willing to spend? Anything I know of is either in resin or fiberglass and is pricey. One person here on the forum that comes to mind in this size is Umi Ryuzuki who works in RC combat and has sources on everything from balsa to composite hulls. Jeff Hern has also been a wealth of advice on kit makers and suppliers of large scale cruisers.

Yeah, I was afraid that the price issue might rear its ugly head. I'm afraid it's gotta be
plain old plastic for me--just dont want to get into the resin stuff. Thanks for responding
though. Others....?

Well I am a firm believer in Scratch building. If you can build a kit, you can build your own parts and scratch build a ship.

There are a lot of projects on the bench and servicing this need for 1/350 cruisers is one of these considerations. I am just coming off of six architectural builds and attempting to put a 1/72nd scale ASR (auxilary submarine recovery) ship hull together for someone this weekend. So my bench is gonna be busy for a bit longer.
Of course there are always my personal projects that need attention also. Dead [xx(]
It seems that a pretty comprehensive list is floating around these boards of 1/350 scale ships. Have a look around, and if you are looking for anything specific, be sure to mention it here. Some day I may be looking for more work...Wink [;)]

If you are interested in the Pensecola at 1/72nd scale I believe it is available. I can verify if you want.
Here are some 8 foot cruisers (the Houstan and Louisville) in 1/72nd and a Pocket battleship(the Lutzow I believe) flanked by destroyers.
