I'm presently working on this kit. Gonna use the Modelbrass PE on her, so I won't be dioramaing her. I am totally blown away by what you did though. I agree with most in that you really need very little additional changes to the water. Maybe a little foaming around the Uboat to give it an "in motion" look and a few white aps, but it looks fantastic as is

Whatcha gotta do now is head to a body where you can't see the other side (like the Pacific) and take some shots against the ocean backdrop. Toss in some filters on the lenses and you have a perfect historical photo!!!

Brilliant job.

Oops, forgot to ask...Any PE or aftermarket sets used?
I'm currently reading the pros and cons on the ModelBrass deck or the Nautilus deck.

Both the water and the sub are super. Nice weathering on the U-boat. The water looks like it has depth. I'm impressedCool [8D]

Wow! Thanks Guys! Big Smile [:D]

My Buddy took the pics....my cheezy camera is kinda limited...I held the dio up towards the sky while he snaped the pics.....on the one shot you can see the stop sign, trees and stuff....the dio was sitting on top of my Pals 1970 XR7 Cougar...a sweet car!

I will post some new ones soon....I finished the rigging last night.

I was at the lake a couple of weeks ago with the family and there were a few stormy days with some good wind....So I got a real good first hand idea of what I wanted the water to look at......photos are ok....but there aint nothing like the REAL THING to help on projects like this.

Excellent work on the sub and the water!
I'd say you've got the color of the water just right.

As someone who's spent alot of time at sea, I'd say the water looks just right. Most people overdo the whitecaps. Unless there is a very stiff wind (say 20+ Knots, or so), whitecaps on the open ocean are usually minimal. You MIGHT want to put on a FEW, but in 1/72 scale, with waves such as you've got whitecaps would be very few and far between. If not non-existent alltogether.

But it does look GREAT!

Really nice job.. You got the " Look" of a slow cruising Boot very well...
I do find it amazing just how many Kool " modeling" tools are to be found in the kitchen.

Shock [:O]Wow!! [wow]

That's beautifull Papa-Echo!

Probably took a lot of guts to cut the hull in half!
The water looks real, VERY real. very convincing. I love the weatheing and the hwhole effect of the 'long' dio.
Looks very nice in these "fun" pics. would like to see more please...

Thanks Dave!

Good question....The kit was first cut for waterline.

OH man! ....If I did sink the whole sub in plaster that Dio would weigh around 60 pounds! Tongue [:P]

Did you cut the boat at the waterline or sink the whole thing into plaster?
Great looking water and model.

Thank Paul! Thanks Luke!

Well.....I think I did it the bone head, old world way.....I built my base with the ship and water depth in mind. I used pine for the bottom and wood 'non-fancy' door trim molding for the sides....glued in my sub and then filled it with plaster.....not good......it took alot more than I thought ( good thing I had enough ) like wow!......as the plaster set ..it warped my whole base....I barley had time to get in my basic sea shapes.

Well before hitting the hay that night ...I squirted water all over the base and by the next day it straighten out well enough.

After some sanding to get some of the unwanted edges and stuff out I painted the base a very dark green.....then I buffed in some dark blue so its kinda mixed and not solid (for lack of better words) I used basic craft store Apple barrel Acrylic paints.

Then I went over it with Liquitex Super Heavy medium Gel.....shaped and textured it with a wet large spoon and some other verious kitchen stuff ( my wife was not home ;-) ....the stuff is quit sticky so you gotta keep your tools wet. The next day....If you see a few dry spots that you missed with the medium gel you just go over it with Future Floor finish......in fact I went over the whole water area including the sides, vent holes and most of the deck the same way....Future is cool stuff!

Its a very HEAVY dio.....If I do anything like this again I will use foam or something else. The cool part is to take it anyware you just place it on the back seat and its not going anyware... No worries!

hmmmmm.....I may just do that Luke .....after I take BETTER pics....those were just for fun.

That looks great, Papa-Echo! I'm just starting to experiment with water myself - what did you use?

This is my first REAL sub effort as well as working with water effects....I had a blast!

I still need to paint the white caps, finish the rigging and a few other small things but here she is so far!
