Its better to start with something simple, get experience, than build your bigger and complex sailing ship. There are many models to start from.
Have fun!

Stay away from square rigged ships as your first project, that will be a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Try a fishing schooner, yawl, something simple to rig. You'll still be getting plenty of experience.

If you must try something complex, at least leave the sails off. That reduces the amount of running rigging and allows a better view of the deck.

Enjoy!

I'm getting ready to purchase my first model boat to build...I'm interested in the older sailing ships...does anyone have any suggestions for a good first boat to purchase for relatively cheap...in case I mess it up.!
