I recommend all of the above...the Basics book can get you by if you only intend to dabble in ship models....

Here's a good link on Indy to get you started.

http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-i/ca35.htm

From that page you can access the following subtopics, each containing photos:

USS Indianapolis in 1932-1941;
USS Indianapolis in 1942;
USS Indianapolis in 1943;
USS Indianapolis in 1944;
USS Indianapolis in 1945;
USS Indianapolis Actions and Activities: May 1934 Naval Review off New York City;
USS Indianapolis Actions and Activities: Presidential South American Tour, 1936;
USS Indianapolis Actions and Activities: Miscellaneous World War II activities;
Loss of USS Indianapolis, 30 July 1945; and
USS Indianapolis Onboard Views, 1932-1945.

Jeff,

One more thing. If found three books by Mike Ashey. They are "Basics of Ship Modeling", "Building and Detailing Scale Model Ships" and "Building Scale Model Ships". Which do you recommend?

Thanks again,

Jeff,

Thanks alot. You packed a lot information in those paragraphs for me. If you have any pictures of the Indy, that would be a big help. I'm a kinda reference nut.

Thanks again,
Jesse

Kalmbach has a book written by Mike Ashey that's a must have. Most of your better hobby shops will carry it.

Building a ship model is only slightly different than doing armor...build your superstructure in subassemblies, and don't attach it to the deck until you're ready. Paint your hull first, in the case of Indy, she wore Measure 22 at the time of her loss. What this means...is stretch a line from the deck edge at the stern, and run it parallel with the waterline.everything below that line is 5-N Navy blue, everything above it is 5-H Haze Gray. Paint your superstructure, turret sides, etc., 5-H Haze Gray, and paint all horizontal surfaces, turret tops, decks, catwalks, etc., 20-B Deck Blue.

Best advice is to work from the centerline of the model outwards towards the edges. This prevents you from knocking details off reaching over or in towards the center of the model.

Since Indy hadn't wore her Ms22 for very long, she won't be as weather-beaten as you might think, so keep your weathering, rust, etc., to a minimum.

Let me know if you need any photos, etc.

I would also recommend the Classic Warships book on the Indy...

Best,

Jeff

HI all,

I usually build armor models but after reading the book "Abandon Ship" about the USS Indianapolis, I've decided to build the Tamiya Indianapolis kit with the photo etch detail set from Tom's ModelWorks.

My question is, does anyone have a suggestion on a good book for plastic ship modelling?

Thanks,
Jesse
