Cottage Industries Hunley
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 11:53 AM
Hello, I am newbie to this site and have just purchased a Cottage Industries Hunley. Anyone put this beast together? I find it a bit overwhelming and a good bit inaccurate. Should I sell it on ebay or is it worth the effort to build her?

Thanks in advance.

Which Hunley did you get? Their 54mm models are based on information prior to the raising of the Hunley. The 1/72 scale is a much more accurate kit and is a little gem, even if it does look like a torpedo when palced next to a 1/72 scale U-boat.
For a more accurate 54mm kit, Verlinden is the way to go, full ship and waterline versions in one box for about $50 US.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I have the 54mm version. Luckily I paid 1/2 price for it. Any suggestions? Any sources for drawings on the little boat?

Thanks,

Go to the library or your favorite bookstore and look for "Raising the Hunley" by Brian Hicks. I got a copy a t a good price from http://www.hamiltonbook.comb Here' s the most nearly "offiicial" Hunley page: http://www.hunley.org/
You really can't fix the 54mm to meet the correct shape.
If you go to Yahoo.com, there's a very active Hunley discussion groups in their forums.
If you wind up doing research on this project, you will find some most interesting stuff, such as the $20 gold piece that saved Lt. Dixon at Shiloh and was found in the sunken ship or the Connecticut soldier's identification tag that was recovered from the Hunley as well.
