PE hatches for WWII Battleship
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 23, 2004 9:27 PM
Hi all,

I'm new to ship modeling (did armor before) and I'm currently working on the USS Arizona in 1/350th scale. The kit needs hatches and new incline ladders. Is there a way to scratch build these or do I need to buy a PE set? If so, what PE sets do you recommend? I already have Tom's Model Works PE sets for the Banner USS Arizona; unfortunately they don't have hatches and inclined ladders.

Thanks,
Jesse

Jesse,
You can buy small photo-etched frets of hatches and inclined ladders from Gold Medal Models. They are around $5 per fret and very nicely detailed; various sizes of hatches (open & closed). The ladders come in several different types and also include accommodation ladders. Well worth the price. www.goldmm.com

If you really want to do the Arizona right, get the Tom's Modelworks PE Boat set. It's around $16 (if I remember correctly) and it really adds a lot of nice detail to the boat deck area.

paulnchamp,

Thanks. I've looked into GMM, but I was just curious what my other options were. I did get the Tom's PE Boat set but I haven't started using it yet.

Your only other option is adding bits of plastic strip...I'd forego the headaches and order the GMM set... Flagship Models also does a 1/350 hatch set, but I'm not sure if White Ensign does them or not.

I know for a fact that Tom is releasing relief etched hatches very soon, as he's a good friend of mine and we talk regularly.
