help for a wingy thingy builder???

Hiya fellas, (and ladies be there any)

I normaly post over in the aircraft section but I need help and this seems to be the place to ask (or maybe the diorama section) Any who, I want to build a PBY Catalina and experiment for the first time with dioramas. What I need help with is have any of you ever made a diorama with water that you can see through? I can make water out of plaster and paint it blue but I want this to look a little more realistic. Ive seen some modelers do dioramas and the water looks like jello. Im sure this isnt what they use though... Any ideas? thanks in advance.

I don't know much about it, but I think they use some kind of resin. It dries clear, but if you add dies or paints to it, you can make it blue or pink or whatever colour you want. The resin is usually a two part thing (resin and a hardener). It dries pretty hard if you get the ratio right (if you don't have enough hardener it dries like a big blob of goo, and too much will make it crack while setting).

Hope this helps.

Dan is correct...you can find the stuff at local craft stores, etc...

Your other option, which I have seen done very nicely, is to make a plexiglass box with an opening cut out for the hull, you sit the model on top, and add your sand bottom, water plants, etc., to the bottom of the display. The glass sides are usually tinted blue-green with clear paints like Gunze or Tamiya.

Pingtang is right. I've used the two part resin in the past. Once you get the feel for the mixture, you'll have some real fun. Did a deep sea fishing boat being pushed over by a wave. Just add the die as you go. Deep blue to almost white for the caps. Best way to go is just keep working at it till you get what you want. Someday I hope to have this down..........
