King George V
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 11:12 AM
I'm going to build my first 1/350 ship, the Tamiya King George V. I would like to build it as it appeared during the Bismarck encounter. Any help with details, such as the radar fit at that time, and especially the paint scheme (were the decks painted or natural at this time?) would be GREATLY appreciated. My web searches have been somewhat inconclusive. Need a KGV expert!

Any chance of 1/350 Gneisenau or Scharnhorst?

There's a new book on King George V-class battleships by Roger Chesneau, a longtime modeler and expert on the subject. I haven't seen it, but it got a good review in the latest issue of the Nautical Research Journal. I believe it has an extensive section of model photographs and data on the details you're interested in - along with info on converting the kit to other members of the class. I don't recall the publisher, but I suspect either Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Pacific Front Hobbies would have it.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Found Roger's book on the Barnes and Noble website, <www.bn.com>. The retail price is $24.95, but (remarkably for such a recent publication) they've got a used one for about $10.00.

The cover photo shows a beautiful model, apparently based on the Tamiya 1/350 kit. Looks to me like this would be a nearly-ideal reference.

I have a kit of this ship too, 1/700 tamiya. I'm wondering, whats the deal with there being no flags in the kit. I've never built a ship before, is this standard for these or what? I mean, its really sort of something I expected to be in there. Or am i crazy? Anyway, Ive been putting off building it not for that reason, but more that I dont really know what to paint most of the details, ie hangar doors, anchors, basically anything that isnt a big piece of gray metal. Although, all the reference photos Ive found on the web show everything as being grey Tongue [:P] oh wait thosde are black and white...
So anyway, should I just not worry about it and go for it, or can anyone help me out here?
Thanks in advance everyone!

Ok, pay attention...cause here's what you need to do KGV in mid-1941...trouble is, the KGV kit from Tamiya represents the ship as she appeared in 1945, not 1941. Major differences not only in the weapons layout, but lots of platform changes as well.

Your best bet would be to get ahold of a Prince of Wales kit and make the necessary changes to her instead. It'll be alot less work....but anyway, here's what you need to do.

She carried Type 284 radar on her fire control director, as well as Type 279 Air Warning radars, one on each topmast. She also carried a HF/DF coil on her main topmast. In early 1941 she received Type 271 radar surface search radar (the lantern) and was carried between the forward high angle directors, in the former lookout position.

She carried 4 Mk VI 8 barrel pom-poms, abreast of the forward funnel and another slighly forward and lower, on each side, and she didn't get 20mms until December of '41, so leave them off. She had 4 UP projectors, one on B turret, 2 on Y turret, and one located on the quarterdeck.

There was no camouflage, she was painted Medium Gray 507B overall, and her decks were natural teak.
