Has anyone used the PE Kit for Yamato 1/350
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 21, 2004 12:09 AM
Hey Guys,
I was curious if anyone has used the PE kit for Tamiya's Yamato 1/350? I found one from White Ensign Models, but I've never used any PE before.
And, while I'm here, has anyone built Tamiya's Yamato 350 before? I would love to hear a kit specific tip!
Thanks,
TS

If you've never used PE before, then I'd reconsider a couple of things...first, try a smaller project if you're using PE for the first time...I would suggest a Tamiya Fletcher in 1/350.

Also, White Ensign makes INCREDIBLE photoetched sets, but I warn you now they are not for the inexperienced modeler. They are very thin, complex, and delicate. The WEM set for the Yamato is perhaps one of the best PE sets ever released, and it's also one of the most advanced you can apply to a model.

With a ship the size of Yamato, you're simply inviting disaster if you haven't worked with PE before.

Gold Medal Models makes a PE set for Yamato, and Tom's Modelworks is working on a basic detail set. I also believe that Eduard does a set, but I think it's in stainless, tougher to work with, but alot easier for inexperienced modelers with big thumbs.

I would suggest getting a handle on a copy of the Anatomy of a ship bood for the Yamato. There are a number of issues with the tamiya kit.

The major problem is that the configuration is a composite that represents no actual Yamato configuration.

The painting instructions are off. Particularlly note the walkway at the stern.

Thanks for the help, guys. I think I will order the Tamiya Fletcher kit with Tom's detail set. I didn't know the WEM set for the Yamato was such a bear. It is probably a good idea to start slow, and that does look like an interesting kit to try anyway.

It's not really a bear, it's just not for beginners...

Imagine if you will, you've just taken a basic first aid course...and then you're asked to perform surgery...that's about what its like... :-)

If you get the Tamiya Fletcher, drop me an email and I'll help you out with photos, etc. I wrote a book on the class.

Jeff
