was there at ANY time, when the fletcher, or any other fletcher class, was just all gray? and if so, what color were the decks?

Post WW2 ships were standard "Haze Gray" with "Deck Gray" decks. Same as modern day, USN started that scheme in about 1946 (I think), and has kept it since. Deck Gray is a very dark gray.

Fletchers wore overall Neutral Haze Gray #27 only after the end of hostilities in 1945. This is a true neutral gray, not the purple-blues of WW2. Her decks would have painted in #4 Deck Gray 20.

Numbers would have been small (wartime style) initially, but would have reverted back to the larger shaded style of numbers by 1947 or so.

Actually Tim, the 1945 Neutrals are different colors than the modern Haze Gray and Deck Gray. The modern Haze gray equates in FS# to 36270, whereas WW2 Neutral Haze Gray comes in about 36300. I have original paint chips of both, and they're close...but not perfect. This also corresponds to the WEM color charts as well. I'm not sure when the USN adopted the 36270 Haze Gray.

Yea, I just find it easier Jeff to use the WEM paint. A lot less headaches as for "color matching".
I did notice there is a very minor difference between WW2 Haze Gray, and Modern Haze Gray.
