Cutty Sark - A Discussion Paper - to all who build her

John Tilley,

I downloaded a discussion Paper on the Cutty Sark, it’s very well written and covers just about everything we ever wanted to know. Here is the link.

http://www.cuttysark.org.uk/papers/Cutty%20Sark%20significance.pdf

On page 13-15 of 29 cover the alterations of the ship under various owners and most interesting is the placement of the boats, davits and skids to a position between the fore & main mast. Also the author explains modifications to the aft deck house in 1954 (they added the aft companion way. She had major modification twice in 1895 & 1954. You can download it in adobe format.

Thank you Jake- I look forward to reading this.

I have the Airfix Classic series kit of the Cutty on the shelf and this will prove most useful- so I can improve on the Revell Cutty I did last year...

Most interesting. Back when I first visited the ship, in '78, I picked up an excellent little book about the Cutty Sark's history and restoration. It included info on what had been done to her during the fifties - and why. I consider the Cutty Sark to be one of the better ship preservation projects. The people responsible made some compromises (e.g., the door in the side and the enlarged companionways), but always with clearly thought-out reasons. (The alternative to the door in the side would have been a massive structure to let visitors - including the disabled - climb over the bulwarks. Such a structure would devastate the profile of the ship. And the alternative to the big ventilators would be an electrically-powered forced-air ventilation system, which, in addition to being visually conspicuous, would introduce some highly un-authentic noises.)

She's a great ship. Let's hope some large sums of money get spent on her intelligently.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
