What is the Proper Order for building/Painting a ship?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 1, 2004 7:05 AM
I am in the middle of a build of the Tamiya 1/700 Yamato and need some advice. Although the instructions in the kit are fine for putting it together, if your using PE, which I am it makes things a tad more difficult. I have the main Superstructure together and have painted the main deck a wood color and have masked that off. My question is, should I add the PE rails prior to painting or after (Paint them seperately) I know this is a situation where thinking it out should work, but i have had alot of problems doing this right and it takes alot of time to get to this point so I dont want to ruin the effort. Any help would of course be appreciated. Big Smile [:D] Also what color should the Yamato deck be painted, I used wood because it looked like what the color photo in the box looked like.

Yamato's deck were natural wood, so you're correct in using the color you chose.

I typically build the superstructure, attach the PE, and then paint when I'm doing an IJN subject. Since the Japanese Navy had no specific deck color (other than lino), it makes life easier to attach everything then paint. Once that's done, I'll attach the superstructure to the main deck level.

This is, of course, different from the way I model other ships from other navies.
