I'm in the process of starting an Oriskany in 1/350 scale by using some parts from the Trumpeter kit (they only make short hulls), lots of GMM, Toms and WEM accessories, and lots of sheet plastic, resin, and Bondo.
The Oriskany was the last of the Essex class carriers to be built. her contruction was cancelled at the end of the war, but was resumed and she was commissioned in 1950. She is known to be in a class all herself for she never had the WW2 Essex class island but was built with the current island design (known as SCB27A upgrade). She was a "long hull" class, which meant she was 16 feet longer than the "short hull" and had a redesigned CIC, Steerage, fire control, and Aircraft storage, in other words, the inside of the Oriskany was different than other Essex class carriers.
If you ever seen the movie "Bridges at Toko Ri", that is the Oriskany in her pre SCB125 form.
SCB125 is the modernization classification given to the Essex Class carriers that recieved the Hurricane Bow and Angle Flightdeck. The Oriskany received her modernization in 1959.
I mentioned this in another thread, that Revell made the Oriskany in 1/520 scale back in the 1960's. However, this is the same kit that they made as Wasp, Hornet, Essex, and Lexington, all short hull carriers and all had differences in communication and fire control systems. Oriskany spent most of her career as an CVA (Attack carrier), where the carriers depicted by Revell were CVWs (Anti submarine) and CVTs (Training).
Next in line was Aurora, and later Lindberg, who made a "toy scale" (about 1/600) Oriskany, and like Revell, made the Lexington, Essex, Bennington, and Shangi La.
Other than the very hard to find 1/700 resin kit by Jim Shirley Models, I do not know of a kit that accuratly depicts the Oriskany. Those who want to venture into building accuratly her are forced to do as I, and that is to research, and then do some kitbash/scratchbuilding.
I hope I didn't discourage you, if you do find one of the Revell kits, by all means, get it and build it. They are fun kits to start with.
Scott.
