CV-59 USS Forrestal (Help Please!!!!!!!!)
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 29, 2004 7:31 PM
I have been searching for a model of the USS Forrestal to build for my uncle who served on the ship. All I can seem to find is 1:700 and 1:600 scale ships, and i really want a much larger scale. So i guess my question is does anybody know where i can get my hands on this model, my prefered scale is 1:350. I found out that Revell made a model at 1:542, but it is out of production, i will settle for this scale as well if anybody knows where i can get it.

I read somwhere that the Saratoga kit is almost identical to the Forrestal kit, does anybody know if this true? If so i will purchase this model, but then i need to know if anybody knows a good place for ordering decals.

Also if anybody can suggest a good place to get accessories, like 1:542 scale plane and plane plullers i would really appriciate it.

Howdy,

Shoot a question to Jeff Herne on this forum. If anybody knows ships, he does!

As far as I know the revell 542 scale maybe the biggest you'll find now. Check Iron Shipwrights website. They may have in 350 scale and in resin form, but it will have a hefty price tags. Option 2 is to get a 350 scale Enterprise or Nimitz and preform major surgery.

Hey there...all that's available right now is the Revell kit. It's not too awful bad if you're willing to put some effort into it. Gold Medal Models makes a dedicated photoetch detail for it, and aircraft are generally readily available from other folks' spares boxes. You can usually find the Forrestal kit on Ebay quite regularly.

This kit has some flaws, but it's still probably the best Forrestal kit ever. The kit was originally issued around 1956. Kits from that era, and re-issues up to the 1970s represent the ship as she was built. As such, it's pretty good, missing only the bulb bow, bilge keels, and a few other small details. In 1989, the mold was updated to represent the Forrestal & Saratoga after their SLEP refit. Sadly, it was not possible to reproduce the modernized ship exactly, and some details are missing or incorrect. The lack of a port-side flight deck extention is particularly obvious. The inaccuracies on the mainmast are also fairly obvious. The upgraded planes and Phalanx guns are very nice though. This kit can be made into an excellent Forrestal class model with some work.

Aircraft on the original include 4 A3D (A-3) Skywarriors, 4 FJ Furies, 4 F7U Cutlasses, 4 F2H Banshees. Aircraft on the updated version include 4 F-14 Tomcats, 4 F-18 Hornets, a pair of S-3 Vikings, and 4 A-6 Intruder/Prowlers.

Kit H-339 is the old version, kit 5022 is the updated version. The updated version is in production as of 1997.

This kit was also released as Independence, Saratoga, and Ranger, so any of those will work for you.

Aurora, Italeri, and Monogram each do a Forrestal in 1/600, 1/720, and 1/600, respectively. The Aurora is pre-SLEP, as is the Italeri, and the Monogram kit is an updated Aurora re-issue, with improved planes.

Hope this helps.
