Anyone help with Whidbey Island Class LSD
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 1:46 PM
I recently took a trip to poland to help out the polish navy with their radar equipment since we gave them the USS Wadsworth they needed training on how to operate and maintain it, while I was there one of the sailors there really inspired me to start Paper/card modeling.......he had a beautiful FFG-7 he was building and he showed me some pictures of others he had sold for thousands of dollars and it seems like the plans there in poland are everywhere but I cannot find any in the US none of the hobby shops know what I am talking about....does anyone know where I can get plans to build my first ship? I am looking for a Whidbey Island class LSD. Please help!!!

My son is stationed on the Whidbey Island and spent a few years on the Tortuga. My daughter in law was stationed on the Gunston Hall for her first tour of duty. If you need any detail information, let me know and I'll try to get it from them. Good luck.

Any plans will work for me, I can scale them down if they are the real thing but in particular I am looking for something in the 1/250 scale, I was stationed onboard the USS Ashland so I have a good idea of all the details of it. I just need the plans for the Hull and superstructure.

Hey there kdial, it looks like Umi is going to take good care of you there. BTW, I live in Suffolk, but claim Hampton Roads because no one knows where Suffolk is.

Hey UMI thanks the Comstock plans I ordered them, the only problem with the Ashland hull line is it is the old LSD class hull line, I am looking for the whidbey Island class hull line. I appreciate the other plans though they helped out alot thanks again...........now if I could just get the Hull line....hmmmm

there are other sources on this page, some you would have to write:

http://history.navy.mil/faqs/faq26-1.htm

it's a USN listing of model manufacturers and plan suppliers.. the only only plans the USN and Smisthonian provide are pretty much all Civil War and before... good luck!!!

hmm I was looking on another site and the Ashland actually was laid after the Whidbey Island, it's supposed to be the same class... of course it might be a later hull than the one you saw on the other site. here's the link:

http://navysite.de/ships/lsd.htm

it took me a second to see the differences... all I remember were the Pensacola and Spiegel Grove when I was out on the Austin and later on the Guam... and they looked just like an LPD for the most part... after looking at the Whidbey Island I see the difference... although I know the Germantown did one cruise with us I dont seem to remember noticing the difference..
